Faith, folklore, and palatelle: The Assumption at the Materdomini Sanctuary
In the Materdomini district of the municipality of Nocera Superiore, in the province of Salerno, stands one of the most beloved Marian sanctuaries in Campania. Tradition traces its origins to the discovery, around the mid-11th century, of an image of the Madonna and Child. A church and adjoining convent were built on the site, later elevated to a minor basilica by Pope Pius XI in 1923 and declared a national monument in 1931. The dark-toned icon is housed in a 1641 porphyry and polychrome marble aedicule, the constant destination for pilgrimages from across the Sarno Valley.
The Madonna di Materdomini Festival is the annual August event that draws thousands of the faithful to the Sanctuary. This is no staged tourist attraction; it is the popular expression of a devotion that has marked the calendar of the Agro Nocerino-Sarnese for centuries, alongside the ancient Festa del Majo on May 1st, which commemorates the temple's consecration in 1061.
For several years, the municipality of Nocera Superiore has complemented the liturgical calendar with a series of evenings in Piazza Materdomini as part of the city's summer program. Folk music concerts, traditional performances, photographic exhibitions dedicated to the neighborhood's history, guided tours, and children's entertainment all aim to showcase the community's artistic, historical, and cultural heritage. Local associations—particularly Il Santuario and Si accettano miracoli—are the driving forces behind the organization.
The emotional heart of the festival is the night between August 13th and 14th. On the final day of the novena, devotees reach the Sanctuary on foot in a procession, carrying quadri (votive paintings) and panels dedicated to the Madonna, which are then displayed on the churchyard and the square. Torches illuminate the climb, the rosary is recited outdoors, and those arriving from afar wait on the basilica steps for the day to break.
At dawn on August 14th, around 5:30 AM, the dawn mass is celebrated, traditionally presided over by the Bishop of the Diocese of Nocera Inferiore-Sarno: this moment officially opens the solemnity of the Assumption of Mary. For the past three years, the same night has also featured a youth pilgrimage from the Diocese, setting off after sunset to reach the Sanctuary before daybreak. On August 15th, the day of the Assumption, solemn celebrations conclude the cycle.
Alongside the liturgy flows the more folkloric side of the festival, which at Materdomini has never been considered a mere side note. Castanets accompany folk songs, dancing takes place on the churchyard, and on the evening of August 14th, the event's gastronomic symbol takes center stage: the palatella, an elongated durum wheat bread with a swollen center, stuffed with pickled eggplant, salted anchovies, cured meats, and local cheeses. Historically, it was paired with watermelon. More than just a typical dish, it is an act of sharing: bought, broken, and eaten together in the square while waiting for dawn.
Few festivals in Campania maintain such continuity between the sacred and the popular. At Materdomini, you are not watching a re-enactment; you are stepping into a living ritual, where votive paintings are carried on shoulders through the night, where the dawn mass is not a spectacle, and where the palatella shared on the churchyard holds the same cultural weight as the rosary recited moments before. For those visiting Campania in August, it is the most authentic way to understand how the region experiences its most heartfelt Marian feast.
The municipality of Nocera Superiore has unveiled the Nocera Estate 2026 program, running from July 19th to September 26th, which dedicates a full cycle of evenings in the square to Materdomini just before the start of the novena. Alongside traditional folk performances, the photographic exhibition Le radici di Materdomini (The Roots of Materdomini) will be featured, dedicated to the visual memory of the neighborhood and its Sanctuary.
On the religious front, the Diocese of Nocera Inferiore-Sarno has relaunched the youth night pilgrimage to the Sanctuary for the third consecutive year, with a message from Bishop Msgr. Giuseppe Giudice released in late May 2026, focusing on Mary's invitation to keep and meditate on life's events in one's heart.
