Music, wine, and poetry amidst the ruins of Ancient Abellinum
Abellinum Events - Wine & Music is the summer festival that the Municipality of Atripalda, in the province of Avellino, dedicates to the intersection of archaeological heritage, live music, and Irpinian food and wine. From July to September, a series of evening events transforms the town's ancient heart into an open-air stage: the ruins of Ancient Abellinum and the halls of the Palazzo della Dogana dei Grani host concerts, poetry readings, and tastings of local wines. It is a simple yet successful formula that has established the festival as one of the most recognizable summer events in the archaeological parks of Campania.
Atripalda stands on the site of ancient Abellinum, a Roman city where walls, paved streets, residential blocks, and thermal baths unearthed by excavations remain today. Most evenings take place here, among the monumental ruins illuminated for the occasion. The second stage is the Palazzo della Dogana dei Grani, a historic building once linked to the grain trade that now serves as an exhibition and cultural center. Access to the area is via Piazza Umberto I through the Rampa San Pasquale: just a few steps from the town center, you enter a deeply evocative archaeological setting.
The rhythm of the events is well-established. At 8:15 PM, the evening begins with readings and performances by Irpinia Poetica, guiding the audience into the area with texts and voices dedicated to local culture. At 9:00 PM, the concert begins, featuring acts ranging from classical music and chamber ensembles to Neapolitan repertoire and singer-songwriter guitar performances. Surrounding the music are tastings curated with local producers: a direct way to discover the wines of Irpinia, a land home to some of the most renowned denominations in Southern Italy.
The festival is intertwined with archaeological research: excavation campaigns conducted on-site by the Department of Cultural Heritage Sciences (DISPAC) of the University of Salerno continue in parallel with the events, with new blocks being investigated and new discoveries announced year after year. Attending a concert at Abellinum means finding yourself in an active site of discovery, where cultural valorization and scientific study proceed hand in hand. This is also the core of the project supported by the municipal administration, which aims to create a true urban archaeological park.
Abellinum Events is designed for a broad audience: families, music lovers, archaeology enthusiasts, and visitors discovering Irpinia in the summer. The evenings are free, held outdoors during the cooler hours, and require no specialized knowledge to be enjoyed. Those arriving from outside the region will find Atripalda a convenient base just a few kilometers from Avellino, in a territory that combines Roman archaeology, Apennine villages, and one of the most solid winemaking traditions in Campania.
The 2026 edition of the festival promoted by the Municipality of Atripalda accompanies citizens and visitors throughout the summer, with events spread across July, August, and September. The debut on Friday, July 3, in the Archaeological Area of Ancient Abellinum, recorded participation exceeding forecasts: the cultural delegate mentioned a shortage of seats and the need to increase them for subsequent evenings, with attendees arriving not only from Atripalda but also from the provincial capital and neighboring towns.
The format remains the one that made the event recognizable: at 8:15 PM, readings and performances by Irpinia Poetica; at 9:00 PM, the concert; and throughout the evening, tastings of local wines. A novelty this year is the more prominent use of the second stage, the Palazzo della Dogana dei Grani, which complements the excavation area.
Parallel to the events, excavations in the archaeological area resumed at the end of June 2026 under the scientific direction of the DISPAC of the University of Salerno: the investigation continues on a block only partially explored in previous campaigns. The festival audience thus attends concerts in a site that is still the subject of active research.
Each evening is preceded at 8:15 PM by Irpinia Poetica readings and performances; concerts start at 9:00 PM. The schedule is subject to change: please check for updates on the Municipality of Atripalda and Archaeological Area channels.
