Patronal Feast of Saint Michael the Archangel (Croce Malloni)

A festival that unites an entire village

Every year, during the final days of September, Croce Malloni — a village in the municipality of Nocera Superiore, in the province of Salerno, Campania — gathers around its patron saint, Saint Michael the Archangel. This is not a tourist-driven event; it is the celebration of a community of about a thousand residents who, for ten days, center their daily lives around the parish church. Festive lights decorate the streets, the square in front of the church becomes a town plaza, and evenings are spent dining together outdoors. The highlight falls on September 29th, the liturgical feast day of the Archangel Michael, the village's patron.

A devotion rooted in the Middle Ages

The name of the location appears in documents as early as 1010, when Abbot Pietro granted land for cultivation in the area known as "Mallone"; the first records of the area date back to 824. The church of Croce Malloni was built in the 12th century and remained long associated with the nearby Marian devotion of Materdomini: according to local tradition, the procession following the discovery of the Madonna's image departed from here around 1061.

The parish was originally dedicated to Saint Fortunatus. It was after the pastoral visit of Bishop Niccolò De Dominicis in 1721 that the seat was transferred to the chapel dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel, adopting the title it still bears today. The 1980 Irpinia earthquake destroyed half of the bell tower and severely damaged the historic structure; this led to the current complex, featuring a modern church capable of accommodating about 600 people, consecrated by Bishop Gioacchino Illiano on April 2, 2006. The restored ancient church was reopened in 2018 and remains the symbolic heart of the night vigil preceding the patronal day.

The religious program

The festival spans more than a single day: it opens with a novena that marks the community's evenings. Each night, the recitation of the Angelic Crown precedes Holy Mass, presided over by priests from the Nocera Inferiore-Sarno diocese and guest clergy. Highlights include:

• The offering of oil for Saint Michael's votive lamp, a devotional gesture involving parish families;
• The procession with the statue of the Archangel along the main parish streets on the Sunday before the feast;
• The Angelic Crown in the ancient church late at night, awaiting the midnight chimes that herald the patron's day;
• The Solemn Masses on September 29th, celebrated in the morning, at noon, and in the evening.

The food festival

Alongside the liturgical events, the parish has organized a food festival during the final days of the feast for years. Stalls set up in the parish grounds offer traditional dishes from the Agro Nocerino-Sarnese area, prepared by committee volunteers: this is when the festival becomes a truly collective experience, with outdoor tables and proceeds supporting community activities. We recommend arriving early in the evening, as turnout from residents and neighboring towns is always high.

Music and open-air evenings

Evenings are enlivened by concerts and shows in the parking lot below the church, which transforms into an open-air arena for the occasion. In recent years, the Croce Malloni patronal feast has also been included in the Nocera Estate municipal program, promoted by the Municipality of Nocera Superiore with the support of the Salerno Chamber of Commerce: the patronal concert marks the finale, bridging the summer civil program and the village's religious tradition.

Visitors to the village at other times of the year find the same vitality: the bond with the Materdomini sanctuary, the destination of the August 14th procession, and participation in the Festa del Majo, the historical re-enactment in early May that brings processions, falconry, and medieval atmospheres to Nocera Superiore. The Saint Michael feast, however, remains the quintessential identity-defining event for the "mallonesi," the time when those who have moved away return home.
