Lamole wine in Italy's smallest historic rural landscape
Clinging to the hills at over 600 meters above sea level, above Greve in Chianti, the village of Lamole is one of the most evocative spots in wine-growing Tuscany: a handful of houses, about ninety residents, and terraced vineyards supported by kilometers of dry-stone walls, recognized as one of the smallest historic rural landscapes in Italy. It is here that every year, at the beginning of summer, I Profumi di Lamole takes place, a food and wine event dedicated to high-altitude Sangiovese and the identity of this corner of Chianti Classico.
For two days, the village streets are filled with tasting stands where producers pour their bottles directly: small family-run estates like Fattoria di Lamole, Castellinuzza, I Fabbri, Le Masse di Lamole, Jurij Fiore e Figlie, and other local wineries. Lamole wine is renowned for its finesse, distinct acidity, and floral aromas born from the freshness of the high hills: a Chianti Classico that tells the story of the mountains rather than the plains.
The most iconic moment of the event is the ceremony of the nono vino di Lamole (the ninth wine of Lamole): the village winemakers pour a portion of their best vintages into a single container, symbolically creating a communal wine that represents the unity of the village. A gesture that captures the collective spirit of this festival, where rivalry between wineries gives way to sharing.
Alongside open tastings, the program offers guided tastings and masterclasses with internationally renowned experts, historical vertical tastings of Lamole wines, and windows into other mountain and hillside territories. Over the years, the festival has hosted winemakers from Conegliano Valdobbiadene and the Val di Cembra, comparing the heroic viticulture of different Italian regions.
I Profumi di Lamole is not just about wine: on Sunday morning, visitors can set off on L'Anello di Lamole, a guided walk of about three and a half hours through vineyards, woods, and dry-stone walls, accompanied by an environmental guide. There are also book presentations on historical and heroic viticulture, as well as the food truck of Dario Cecchini, the famous butcher from Panzano in Chianti, who offers meat-based gastronomic pairings designed to accompany the wine.
Organized by the I Profumi di Lamole Association together with the Municipality of Greve in Chianti, in the province of Florence, the event has grown with each edition to become an unmissable appointment for Chianti Classico lovers. Visiting Lamole during the festival means discovering an authentic Tuscan landscape, far from mass tourism routes, where wine is still a matter of family and landscape.
The 2026 edition, the twenty-third, opened on Saturday, June 6, at 3:00 PM with the ribbon-cutting ceremony and the inauguration of the tasting stands in the village of Lamole. The protagonists were local producers with their high-altitude Chianti Classico, joined by guest winemakers from Conegliano and the Val di Cembra.
Key moments included the ceremony of the nono vino di Lamole, guided tastings led by Chianti Classico experts, and the Sunday morning walk along L'Anello di Lamole. Completing the gastronomic offer was the food truck of Dario Cecchini, the butcher from Panzano in Chianti.
Throughout the weekend: Dario Cecchini food truck, vineyard tours, and direct wine sales. Participating wineries include: Fattoria di Lamole, Castellinuzza, I Fabbri, Le Masse di Lamole, Jurij Fiore e Figlie, and other local estates, with guest winemakers from Conegliano Valdobbiadene and the Val di Cembra.
Lamole is a hamlet of Greve in Chianti (Florence), accessible by car from the SR222 "Chiantigiana" road by turning towards Lamole; the final stretch of road is narrow and winding. By train, the nearest useful station is Florence Santa Maria Novella, then continue by car. It is advisable to arrive early as parking in the village is limited.
Tasting stands are generally open from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM on Saturday and from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM on Sunday.
Admission to the festival is free; for tastings, you can purchase a branded glass. Guided tastings and walks require reservations. Info and contacts: [email protected], tel. +39 328 6124658.
Wear comfortable shoes for walking among the terraced vineyards and bring a warm layer: at 600 meters above sea level, evenings can be cool even in June.
