Great chamber music in the Ghirlandaio Cenacle Hall at Badia a Passignano
The Pentecost Festival is one of the most evocative chamber music series in Tuscany. It is held in the municipality of Barberino Tavarnelle, in the province of Florence, and takes place on the stage of the Cenacle Hall of the Abbey of San Michele Arcangelo in Badia a Passignano, a space frescoed in 1476 by Domenico Ghirlandaio. Listening to live music in front of a Renaissance masterpiece, nestled in the Chianti hills, is an experience that blends art, landscape, and exceptional performance.
In 2026, the festival celebrates its 40th edition, a significant milestone for an event that has grown over time to become a benchmark for classical music lovers throughout the region. The festival is organized by the Associazione Amici della Musica Tavarnelle, under the artistic direction of Tiziano Mealli, and is supported and sponsored by the Municipality of Barberino Tavarnelle, the Tuscany Region, and the Metropolitan City of Florence, with additional contributions from ChiantiBanca and the Fondazione CR Firenze.
The program alternates between established names in international concert performance and emerging young musicians, with repertoires ranging from classical and romantic works (Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Tchaikovsky) to 20th-century pieces (Berio, Debussy, Ravel, Respighi). Concerts typically take place in the evening, around 9:15 PM, offering the audience the chance to hear quartets, trios, duos, and chamber ensembles in an acoustically intimate space with profound historical and artistic significance.
The Badia a Passignano Abbey, nestled among the vineyards and olive groves of the Chianti Classico region, is one of the most fascinating monastic complexes in Tuscany. The choice to host concerts in its Cenacle Hall makes the Pentecost Festival a unique event, where musical quality engages with a landscape and heritage of absolute value. For those visiting Chianti, it is also an opportunity to discover an authentic corner of the Florentine territory, far from the most crowded tourist circuits.
The 40th edition of the Pentecost Festival confirms the formula that has made the series famous: chamber music concerts in the evocative Cenacle Hall frescoed by Ghirlandaio, inside the Badia a Passignano Abbey in Barberino Tavarnelle. Five evenings, from early June to early July, mark a journey ranging from classical and romantic repertoires to 20th-century works, with a special focus on the dialogue between established performers and new generations of musicians. The 2026 edition culminates with a special tribute to pianist Bruno Canino on the occasion of his ninetieth birthday.
