Allegorical floats, the Pastore and Pacchiana, and the Quarantana in the heart of the Gargano
The Historic Carnival of San Nicandro Garganico is much more than just a masquerade: it is the beating heart of a community in the Province of Foggia that has passed down a heritage of rituals, costumes, and traditions rooted in the history of the Gargano for generations. For two weeks, the historic center and the modern Piazza IV Novembre are filled with color, music, and joy, uniting children, young people, and the elderly in a shared legacy.
By a decree of the Director General of Performing Arts of the Ministry of Culture on November 24, 2025, the San Nicandro Carnival was officially included among the Historic Carnivals of Italy. This milestone is not merely a bureaucratic stamp, but a certification of cultural value that belongs to the entire country and places San Nicandro Garganico alongside Italy's greatest carnival traditions.
The most spectacular moment is the parade of allegorical floats and masked groups, which travel through the city streets starting from Parco San Michele to reach a crowded and vibrant Piazza IV Novembre, where the day ends with DJ sets and music. Alongside the floats, school children also participate, taking center stage on a day dedicated to the little ones.
The identity core of the event is the Historical Parade of the Pastore and the Pacchiana, which evokes the ancient peasant and pastoral costumes of the Gargano territory: silks, brocades, lace, and fringes on dark, skillfully pleated wool skirts, worn by hundreds of participants. It is a living page of local history that has been renewed for centuries.
The festival concludes with two rituals of profound symbolic value: the ancestral sound of the Campanacci (cowbells), which marks the symbolic "death" of the Carnival and the beginning of Lent, and the Quarantana, the ancient figure dressed in black representing the transition into the penitential season. A finale suspended between faith, folklore, and tradition, which renews the community's deep bond with its origins every year in this corner of Puglia overlooking the Gargano promontory.
The 2026 edition held special significance, being the first celebrated after the inclusion of the San Nicandro Carnival among the Historic Carnivals of Italy by decree of the Ministry of Culture on November 24, 2025. The three major parades of allegorical floats and masked groups on February 8, 15, and 17 colored the city center, while the historical parade of the Pastore and the Pacchiana returned on February 16 with hundreds of costumed participants.
The event concluded on February 17 with a vibrant and crowded Piazza IV Novembre and the evocative Campanacci ritual, whose ancestral sound marked the symbolic "death" of the Carnival and the beginning of Lent. The carnival cycle closed definitively on February 22 with the thirty-first edition of the Quarantana at Palazzo Zaccagnino, the final appointment blending faith, folklore, and tradition.
The parades wind through the streets of the center of San Nicandro Garganico (Province of Foggia, Puglia), starting from Parco San Michele and arriving at Piazza IV Novembre. Historical events also take place in the ancient village of Terravecchia, in Piazza Domenico Fioritto, and at Palazzo Zaccagnino.
San Nicandro Garganico can be reached by car via the A14 motorway (Poggio Imperiale-San Severo exit) and has a train station on the Adriatic line. The nearest airport is Bari-Palese.
All parades and Carnival events are free of charge and take place outdoors.
