Marian devotion, brass bands, and fireworks in a Gargano village

Every year on September 8th—the day the Church celebrates the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary—the village of Cagnano Varano, overlooking the lake of the same name in northern Gargano (Foggia province, Puglia), pays tribute to the Madonna delle Grazie with days of festivities that weave together popular faith and civil tradition. The celebrations in honor of the Madonna delle Grazie are among the most anticipated events of the year in Cagnano, drawing both locals and visitors back to the village.
The cult centers on the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, an ancient convent complex of the Friars Minor Observant located in the heart of the village. The building, in its current 17th-century form, was consecrated by the Bishop of Manfredonia, Vincenzo Maria Orsini (the future Pope Benedict XIII), and has long housed a precious 14th-century image of the Virgin. Marian devotion in Cagnano has medieval roots and has always been particularly dear to the women and the farming community of the Gargano.
The heart of the festival is the solemn procession of the statue of the Madonna delle Grazie, which travels through the village streets between September 7th and 8th, accompanied by the clergy and a large gathering of the faithful. Liturgical celebrations are complemented by traditional illuminations that light up the streets and squares of the historic center.
A major focus is placed on brass band music, a hallmark of Puglian patronal festivals. In recent editions, the festival has hosted evening concerts by prestigious ensembles—such as the Gran Concerto Bandistico di Conversano—while the Città di Cagnano Varano Musical Band, which celebrated its thirtieth anniversary in 2025, accompanies the highlights of the festivities. The characteristic parade of the carters, one of the most folkloric elements of the event, is also a must-see.
The festivities conclude with grand pyrotechnic displays, highly anticipated by the community: the fireworks lighting up the sky over Cagnano Varano represent the most spectacular and engaging moment of the entire event.
Organized by the Madonna delle Grazie Festival Committee with the support of the Municipality of Cagnano Varano and the local parish, the celebrations are much more than a religious recurrence: they represent a meeting point for the entire Gargano community and for those who return to the village specifically for these days. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced: the festival traditionally falls on September 8th, coinciding with the Nativity of the Virgin.
