The reckless soapbox race in the heart of the Alto Tavoliere
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In the heart of the Alto Tavoliere, just a stone's throw from the Gargano and the border with Molise, the town of Poggio Imperiale (Province of Foggia, Puglia) preserves one of the most original summer traditions in the Capitanata: the Carruccio Granprix, a reckless soapbox race that transforms the town center every August into a circuit of speed, joy, and artisanal ingenuity.
The carruccio is a simple, entirely self-built vehicle: a wooden board with two perpendicular axles, one at the rear and one at the front. Two wheels made from old ball bearings—often salvaged from workshop scrap—are mounted on the rear axle, while the front axle is steerable and wider than the board, allowing the driver to rest their feet for steering. A third bearing acts as the steering pivot. No engine, no mechanical propulsion: just arms, legs, and plenty of inventiveness.
Each team consists of ten people: one pilot on the carruccio and nine teammates who push it in a relay. The track winds around the square and along the town's main avenue for four laps, covering a total distance of over two kilometers. The carruccio that crosses the finish line first wins, but the challenge is not just about speed.
The event originated from traditional local games that a group of young people wanted to include in the summer evenings of Poggio Imperiale. The great enthusiasm of both competitors and the public led to the carruccio race becoming the main attraction of the evening starting in 2007. Today, the Carruccio Granprix is organized by the 'Terranova in Festa' committee with the patronage of the municipal administration and is part of the Poggio d'Estate program, which brings the town to life throughout the season.
On the evening of the race, the center of Poggio Imperiale fills with spectators from all over the Capitanata: families, neighborhood team fans, and curious onlookers crowd along the route to cheer on the pilots and pushers. Between spectacular escapes, flips, and overtakes, the Carruccio Granprix is a concentrate of healthy popular competition and the community spirit that characterizes summer festivals in Puglia.
The Carruccio Granprix is expected to return in summer 2026 to the streets of Poggio Imperiale (FG), but as of the writing of this page, the dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced.
The soapbox race is traditionally part of the Poggio d'Estate program in mid-August: as soon as the 'Terranova in Festa' committee and the municipal administration publish the official calendar, this page will be updated with the confirmed date and race details.
The race takes place in the center of Poggio Imperiale (FG), between the main square and the town avenue, as part of the Poggio d'Estate summer festival, usually in mid-August during the evening.
Poggio Imperiale is located in the Alto Tavoliere, in the province of Foggia. By car, it can be reached via the A14 motorway (Poggio Imperiale exit) and the SS16 Adriatica state road. The Poggio Imperiale train station is on the Bologna–Lecce Adriatic line.
The event is free and held outdoors. It is recommended to arrive early to find a spot along the route.
