Ferragosto celebrations in honor of the patron saints, in the heart of the Gargano
In the heart of summer, when the Gargano fills with locals returning to the village for Ferragosto and visitors from nearby towns, Rignano Garganico โ a small municipality in the province of Foggia, perched high above the Gargano promontory and the Tavoliere delle Puglie โ celebrates its two patron saints. It is one of the most heartfelt festivals on the local calendar, an event that weaves together religious devotion, folk tradition, and entertainment.
The festival honors Maria Santissima Assunta, celebrated on August 15th (Ferragosto), and Saint Roch, celebrated on August 16th. The most solemn moment is the procession that carries the statues of the two patrons through the streets of the historic center, accompanied by the hymns and prayers of the faithful. On August 16th, at 11:00 AM, the traditional Eucharistic Celebration is held in Piazza San Rocco, the beating heart of the festivities.
Surrounding the religious events is the full repertoire of a traditional Apulian village festival: the brass band concert featuring sacred and popular music, the artistic illuminations that light up the village streets, the characteristic batteria of daytime fireworks, food stalls serving typical Gargano cuisine, and craft markets. In the evening, the square becomes a large open-air stage.
The highlight of the evening entertainment is the series of free concerts hosted in Piazza San Rocco, which draw large crowds from across the Gargano every year. Each evening concludes in style with a fireworks display that lights up the sky above the town.
Situated on a rocky spur at an altitude of over 600 meters, Rignano Garganico is the natural balcony of the promontory, offering panoramic views that stretch across the Tavoliere to the sea. The patronal feast is the ideal opportunity to discover the ancient village, its hospitality, and its traditions, at a time of year when the community gathers in full.
For the 2026 edition, the Municipality of Rignano Garganico, in collaboration with the Festival Committee, has announced a prominent musical lineup for the patronal festivities on August 14, 15, and 16. Piazza San Rocco will host three evenings of music and entertainment, framed as always by solemn Masses, the procession of the patron saints' statues, brass band concerts, artistic illuminations, and fireworks.
The complete program of civil and religious festivities, including detailed times for Masses, processions, brass band concerts, and fireworks, will be released by the Festival Committee in the weeks leading up to the event.
The festivities take place in the historic center of Rignano Garganico (province of Foggia), with the epicenter in Piazza San Rocco.
By car: from Foggia, you can reach Rignano Garganico via the roads winding up toward the Gargano; the town is about 40 km from the provincial capital. The most convenient train stations are in San Marco in Lamis or Foggia, from where you can continue by car or local connections.
Evening concerts in Piazza San Rocco and festival events are free of charge.
The festival is traditionally held in mid-August, around the 15th (Maria SS.ma Assunta) and the 16th (Saint Roch).
