The Patronal Feast of Saint Placidus the Martyr is the most important date on the calendar for Poggio Imperiale, a town in the Upper Tavoliere in the province of Foggia, in the heart of northern Puglia. Every year, in the first days of October, the entire town mobilizes to honor its patron saint with a packed program that combines religious, civil, and popular elements: a novena and triduum of preparation, a solemn procession, brass bands, artistic illuminations, concerts in the square, and pyrotechnic displays.

Devotion to Saint Placidus is deeply rooted in the town's history: Poggio Imperiale was founded in the second half of the 18th century by Prince Placido Imperiale, who wished to dedicate the first church of the new settlement, consecrated around 1760, to his namesake saint. The bond was strengthened in 1913 when a relic of the martyr arrived in town—a bone fragment from the Church of San Giovanni di Malta in Messina, where Saint Placidus is particularly venerated—donated during a pastoral visit by Archbishop Benedetto Bonazzi. Alongside the patron, the community also celebrates the co-patron Saint Michael the Archangel and venerates Saint Nazarius, whose statues are carried together in the procession.

The procession and religious rites

The spiritual heart of the feast is the procession of the statues of the saints through the streets of the center, accompanied by brass bands and the festive sound of church bells. The celebrations include a solemn mass in the Mother Church, the veneration of the relic kissed by the faithful, and moments of prayer organized by the "San Placido and San Michele" Pious Union and the parish. It is a heartfelt rite that renews the identity and sense of belonging of this small Puglian community every year.

Concerts and civil celebrations

The religious aspect is complemented by a rich civil program organized by the Patronal Feast Committee, which over the years has brought well-known names of Italian music to Piazza Imperiale. The 2025 edition featured Franco Ricciardi and Alunni del Sole; previous editions have seen artists such as The Kolors, Dodi Battaglia, Dik Dik, and Michele Zarrillo take the stage. The concerts are traditionally free of charge and conclude with the highly anticipated fireworks, which light up the Tavoliere sky and bring the festivities to a close.

An event for the whole community

Between market stalls, illuminations, music, and devotion, the Feast of Saint Placidus represents a gathering point for Poggio Imperiale that brings together residents, returning emigrants, and visitors from neighboring towns. It is the ideal opportunity to discover an authentic corner of the less-touristy Puglia, where patronal traditions continue to mark the rhythm of town life. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced: the full program is usually released by the Committee in the weeks leading up to the feast.
