The largest Nativity in the smallest municipality of the Gargano
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In the heart of the Gargano, perched on a rocky spur overlooking the Tavoliere plain, the small village of Rignano Garganico preserves one of the most evocative Christmas representations in Puglia. Every year, during the festive season, its medieval old town dons the guise of ancient Bethlehem to host the Living Nativity, an event that celebrated its 26th edition in 2025. The chosen slogan, "The largest Nativity in the smallest municipality," perfectly captures the spirit of the event: Rignano Garganico is indeed the least populous town within the Gargano National Park, yet it brings to life a nativity scene of extraordinary scale and participation.
Visitors wander through the old town's alleys illuminated by torches, in an atmosphere where time seems to stand still. Along the route, the ancient crafts of the Gargano farming civilization, period costumes, and sacred scenes of the Nativity come to life. The path, set up among stone houses, courtyards, and workshops, recreates the authentic image of a village from two thousand years ago, with local actors portraying artisans, shepherds, and characters from the Gospel story. Among the most beloved features is the workshop of the "Tonino Del Vecchio" Cultural Association, which preserves the ancestral songs and sounds of the territory.
The event is the result of a collective effort involving the entire community: the Municipal Administration, the Living Nativity Association, the Gargano National Park, the Maria SS.ma Assunta Parish, the Pro Loco, the Civil Protection, AVIS, ACLI, and numerous other local associations all collaborate on its realization. It is precisely this participatory dimension that makes the Living Nativity not just a tourist attraction, but also a defining moment of identity for the inhabitants of Rignano Garganico, in the province of Foggia, in the Puglia region.
To facilitate the visit, the organizers provide QR Codes on the posters and along the route, allowing visitors to easily locate parking areas and follow the recommended itinerary directly from their smartphones. The event takes place in the late afternoon and evening, when the darkness enhances the play of torches and lights on the stone facades, offering visitors a unique sensory experience in the winter Gargano.
The Living Nativity of Rignano Garganico returns during the 2026 Christmas season for its 27th edition. Official dates have not yet been announced: the performance is usually held between late December and Epiphany, with openings in the late afternoon in the medieval old town. The full program will be published by the organizers on the official website closer to the holidays.
