About Waiting for Christmas

Every December, San Nicandro Garganico comes alive with 'Waiting for Christmas', a festival that brightens the town from the lighting of the tree until Epiphany. Amidst the lights of Piazza IV Novembre, the markets, and food stalls, the heart of the celebration beats in the ancient Terravecchia village, where a stunning Living Nativity featuring over fifty actors takes center stage. It is a journey into Gargano traditions, complete with bagpipers, local crafts, and regional flavors in this town in the province of Foggia.

Waiting for Christmas in San Nicandro Garganico

In the heart of the Gargano, San Nicandro Garganico celebrates the holiday season with one of the most cherished events on its calendar: Waiting for Christmas and Christmas Markets. For nearly a month, from the lighting of the tree until the arrival of the Three Wise Men, this town in the province of Foggia transforms into a trail of lights, scents, and traditions that encompasses squares, narrow alleys, and historical monuments. The most recent edition, the thirteenth, confirmed the festival as a defining event for the local community and the many visitors who head up to the Gargano promontory during the holidays.

The Living Nativity in Terravecchia

The most anticipated moment is the Living Nativity in Terravecchia, the town's ancient medieval core. Among stone houses, arches, courtyards, and narrow lanes, about fifty actors reconstruct a evocative Bethlehem filled with ancient trades, scenes of daily life, and settings carefully curated within buildings provided by the residents themselves. The atmosphere is made even more authentic by the bagpipers who accompany visitors along the route. The event culminates with the arrival of the Three Wise Men on Epiphany, the grand finale of the festival.

Markets, Taste, and Tradition

Alongside the nativity, the festival offers Christmas markets with stalls selling local crafts, gift ideas, and traditional products, as well as food stalls that bring the flavors of Gargano cuisine to the table. There is no shortage of events dedicated to food and wine, such as the Christmas edition of the Heritage Wine Fest, along with street performers, puppet shows, and storytelling performances that animate Terravecchia and the Swabian Castle. On New Year's Eve, the party heats up with live music, while Piazza IV Novembre hosts the tree lighting and the official opening of the markets.

A Christmas for the Whole Community

Waiting for Christmas is, above all, a community celebration: the festival is organized by the Patronal Feast Committee together with numerous local associations and the municipal administration, with the direct involvement of families, young people, and volunteers. It is this participatory spirit that allows the event to attract thousands of visitors from across the province of Foggia and strengthens the town's bonds during the most magical time of the year.

In the Heart of the Gargano

Visiting 'Waiting for Christmas' means discovering San Nicandro Garganico in its most intimate guise: a village on the Gargano promontory, nestled between Lake Lesina, the Adriatic coast, and the inland forests. The Terravecchia district, illuminated for the holidays, is the perfect opportunity to combine tradition, culture, and landscape in an authentic corner of northern Apulia.
