About Casalotto Living Nativity

During the Christmas season, the historic Casalotto district in San Marco in Lamis transforms into a captivating living nativity scene. Amidst the alleys and charming corners of the old town, performers in period costumes bring artisan workshops, scenes of daily life, and the Holy Family's stable to life, recreating the atmosphere of Palestine from two thousand years ago. This event, organized by the Catholic Action in collaboration with the local municipality, blends faith, tradition, and the promotion of Gargano's cultural heritage into a community gathering open to all.

A living nativity in the heart of Casalotto

Every year, during the Christmas holidays, the historic Casalotto district in San Marco in Lamis, in the province of Foggia, comes alive with one of the most evocative living nativity scenes in the Gargano region. The narrow streets, alleys, and characteristic corners of the old town become the natural stage for a performance that recreates the atmosphere of Palestine from two thousand years ago. The initiative is the result of a collaboration between the local Catholic Action and the municipal administration, with the support of numerous local volunteers.

What to see along the route

Along the path that winds through the district, performers in period costumes bring a choral fresco of the Nativity to life:

  • Artisan workshops featuring ancient trades, reviving the traditions of rural and craft labor;
  • Scenes of daily life from two thousand years ago, reconstructed with care and passion;
  • The stable with the Holy Family, the emotional heart of the route, designed to be accessible even to those with mobility issues.

Admission is free and open to all, conceived as a moment of sharing, community, and appreciation of local cultural heritage.

Casalotto and the historic center

Casalotto is one of the oldest cores of San Marco in Lamis: a maze of narrow streets, stairways, and courtyards that tell the story of the town. Walking through it during the living nativity also means rediscovering the charm of the historic center, with its evocative views illuminated for the occasion. In recent editions, the route has wound around Vicoletto Centola, with entrances and exits designed to manage visitor flow and allow everyone to appreciate each scene in peace.

San Marco in Lamis, gateway to the Gargano

Located at the foot of the Gargano Promontory in Puglia, San Marco in Lamis is a town deeply rooted in religious and popular traditions, also famous for its Fracchie on Good Friday. The Casalotto living nativity fits into this fabric of devotion and strong community identity: it is not just a sacred representation, but an opportunity for the community to come together and for visitors to discover one of the most authentic villages in the Province of Foggia during the most magical time of the year.
