About Gnocchi Festival

In Acquafondata, a small mountain village in the Mainarde range of Frosinone province, the Gnocchi Festival has been celebrating the renowned local red potato for over sixty years. On an August evening, local women prepare gnocchi following a traditional recipe, served in the historic center amidst folk music and tastings. A genuine, family-friendly event that captures the rural identity of the Ciociaria region and the Comino Valley, in the heart of Lazio.

A rural tradition spanning over sixty years

The Gnocchi Festival of Acquafondata is one of the longest-running gastronomic celebrations in lower Lazio. The first edition dates back to 1961, initiated by the then-mayor Giovanni Fuoco, and the event has since grown into an unmissable highlight of the Ciociaria summer. The 63rd edition was held in 2025, confirming a rare continuity that binds generations of the village together.

The village of Acquafondata and its red potato

Acquafondata is the smallest municipality in the Province of Frosinone: just a few hundred inhabitants nestled at an altitude of about 900 meters in the Mainarde mountains, in a karst landscape between the Ciociaria and the Comino Valley. Its well-drained mountain soil is particularly suited for cultivating the Acquafondata red potato, a tuber that retains little water and produces a firm dough, ideal for gnocchi. The festival was born to showcase this rural excellence and today stands as a symbol of the village's identity, alongside its famous bagpipe tradition.

The festival

The event takes place on an evening in the second half of August and maintains a simple, familiar atmosphere. In the heart of the historic center, local women prepare the gnocchi by hand according to the handed-down recipe before serving them to the many visitors. The evening continues with live music, folk groups, traditional songs, and dances, accompanied by tastings of wine and typical local products, such as pecorino cheese from the surrounding mountains.

What to expect

  • Gnocchi made from Acquafondata red potatoes, prepared and seasoned according to the traditional recipe;
  • evening service in the village's historic center;
  • folk music performances and traditional groups;
  • tastings of wine and typical products from the Comino Valley;
  • a convivial, village-style atmosphere defined by mountain hospitality.

A journey into the flavors of Ciociaria

Attending the Gnocchi Festival means discovering an authentic corner of inland Lazio, far from the tourist trails, where mountain cuisine and rural memory remain vibrant. Amidst the views of the Mainarde range and the hospitality of the small town of Acquafondata, the festival is the perfect opportunity to savor a simple, honest dish that was born from the land and has become a true community symbol over the years.
