Celebrating the red potato gnocchi in the mountain village of Acquafondata
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Gnocchi Festival of Acquafondata is one of the longest-running gastronomic celebrations in lower Lazio. The first edition dates back to 1961, initiated by the then-mayor Giovanni Fuoco, and the event has since grown into an unmissable highlight of the Ciociaria summer. The 63rd edition was held in 2025, confirming a rare continuity that binds generations of the village together.
Acquafondata is the smallest municipality in the Province of Frosinone: just a few hundred inhabitants nestled at an altitude of about 900 meters in the Mainarde mountains, in a karst landscape between the Ciociaria and the Comino Valley. Its well-drained mountain soil is particularly suited for cultivating the Acquafondata red potato, a tuber that retains little water and produces a firm dough, ideal for gnocchi. The festival was born to showcase this rural excellence and today stands as a symbol of the village's identity, alongside its famous bagpipe tradition.
The event takes place on an evening in the second half of August and maintains a simple, familiar atmosphere. In the heart of the historic center, local women prepare the gnocchi by hand according to the handed-down recipe before serving them to the many visitors. The evening continues with live music, folk groups, traditional songs, and dances, accompanied by tastings of wine and typical local products, such as pecorino cheese from the surrounding mountains.
Attending the Gnocchi Festival means discovering an authentic corner of inland Lazio, far from the tourist trails, where mountain cuisine and rural memory remain vibrant. Amidst the views of the Mainarde range and the hospitality of the small town of Acquafondata, the festival is the perfect opportunity to savor a simple, honest dish that was born from the land and has become a true community symbol over the years.
Following the 63rd edition in 2025, the Gnocchi Festival of Acquafondata is also expected in the summer of 2026 in the village's historic center. The event, dedicated to the local red potato, traditionally includes an evening distribution of gnocchi, folk music, and tastings of typical products from the Comino Valley. The date and detailed program have not yet been released: we recommend following the official channels of the Municipality for updates.
Acquafondata is located in the eastern part of the Province of Frosinone, in the Mainarde mountains. By car from the A1 Rome-Naples motorway, take the Cassino exit and follow the road towards the Comino Valley until you reach the village. The town is approximately 160 km from Rome.
The festival is traditionally held on an evening in the second half of August. The date for the 2026 edition has not yet been announced: we recommend checking for updates on the official channels of the Municipality of Acquafondata.
As this is an evening event at altitude, it is advisable to bring a warm layer, even in summer. Parking and food stalls are concentrated in the center of the village.
