A festival that lights up the village in November

Autumn Colors and Flavors is the festival that brings the historic center of Pignataro Interamna to life every November. Located in a small town in the province of Frosinone, in southern Lazio, the event follows a simple yet successful concept: take the most bountiful season for the Ciociaria countryside—chestnuts, mushrooms, truffles, new wine, and homemade desserts—and bring it into the village streets, turning alleys and small squares into one large open-air celebration.

The event was established in 2024 on the initiative of the Pro Loco Interamna Lirenas, with the patronage of the Municipality of Pignataro Interamna and the Province of Frosinone. The first edition, held on November 16, 2024, saw a higher turnout than expected despite uncertain weather, and the event returned the following year with an even richer program.

The heart of the festival: food stalls

The true engine of Autumn Colors and Flavors is the series of food stalls set up along the route through the historic center. The cuisine is local, generous, and unpretentious. Dishes served in past editions have included:

• gnocchetti with sausage and porcini mushrooms or shrimp cream;
• trofie pasta with mushrooms and truffles;
• pizza a portafoglio (folded pizza), sandwiches, and warm focaccia;
• fried fish and rustic potatoes;
• tripe with tomato sauce, a traditional peasant dish;
• roasted chestnuts, homemade desserts, and local wines.

It is a culinary tradition that perfectly reflects the Ciociaria region: comfort food, forest products, and recipes that local families have prepared for generations during the colder months.

Crafts, workshops, and folk music

Alongside the culinary route, there is a craft market featuring handmade items and autumn decorations, perfect for those looking for a unique piece or a gift idea for the holidays. There are also creative workshops designed for both children and adults, making the event ideal for a family outing.

The musical entertainment is rooted in tradition: past editions have featured I Cantori – In Terra di Lavoro, a group that brings folk songs and dances from the area between lower Lazio and the Terra di Lavoro to the square, accompanied by organettos, tambourines, and traditional dances. In the evening, the focus shifts to dance music with DJ sets, allowing the party to continue late into the night for all ages. Among the new additions is an autumn dessert competition open to participants, rewarding the best homemade seasonal treats.

Pignataro Interamna and the surrounding area

The village sits in the Liri Valley, just a few kilometers from Cassino and the Via Casilina, in an area with ancient roots: the name of the Pro Loco recalls Interamna Lirenas, the Latin colony founded in the 3rd century BC. Its ruins are located within the municipal territory and have been the subject of major international archaeological excavations in recent years. Visiting the festival is therefore also a great excuse to discover a corner of the Ciociaria that remains off the beaten path of mass tourism.
