An autumn day in the heart of the Comino Valley

Autumnal Sweetness is the event that the Municipality of Picinisco, in the province of Frosinone (Lazio), dedicates each year in late September to the fruits of the forest and mountain flavors. The village, recognized as one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy and overlooking the Comino Valley, sits at the gateway to the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park: a natural setting that makes this celebration much more than a simple gastronomic festival.

The event was born from the initiative of the Picinisco Pro Loco, in collaboration with the Municipality and with the support of the Lazio Region, and has grown with each edition to become one of the most anticipated autumn events in the Ciociaria region. The common thread is always the same: the mushroom, the star of the beech forests surrounding the village, presented not only as a culinary product but as a subject of naturalistic knowledge.

From forest foraging to the mycological exhibition

The day begins very early, with participants meeting in Piazza Ernesto Capocci at dawn before heading out for a guided excursion into the woods. Mycologists and naturalists, along with Park staff, accompany the groups: the foraging becomes a true open-air lesson on species identification, responsible harvesting rules, and the fragility of mountain ecosystems.

Upon returning to the village, the gathered mushrooms are displayed in the mycological exhibition set up in the historic center. Dozens of specimens are exhibited, cataloged, and discussed by experts, who are available to the public in the afternoon for open dialogue. There is also the traditional award for the most beautiful mushroom brought in by foragers, a lighthearted moment much loved by local participants.

The cuisine of the Ciociaria mountains

Lunch is the convivial heart of the festival. The signature dish is barley and mushroom soup, a hearty, humble recipe belonging to the valley's peasant memory, served alongside other local specialties. Picinisco is, after all, a town with a great cheesemaking tradition: it is home to the Pecorino di Picinisco DOP, a local pastoral heritage product, often found at producers' stalls alongside cured meats, preserves, and forest products.

Games, music, and folk tradition

The afternoon is dedicated to families, with traditional children's games in the village squares: a way to revive pastimes that were part of daily life before mass emigration. In the evening, music takes center stage with concerts by folk groups performing the repertoire of the central Apennines—accordion, bagpipes, tarantellas, and work songs. Recent editions have featured groups such as the TerraNostra Folk Band and Radici Popolari.

Why it's worth the trip

Autumnal Sweetness is not a massive event, and that is precisely its value. Those who arrive in Picinisco find a stone village perched at an altitude of 725 meters, narrow alleys, a castle, and panoramas stretching over the Mainarde mountains. The festival allows you to experience it from the inside, walking in the woods with those who have known them forever and then sitting down to eat with the community. It is one of the best opportunities to discover inland Lazio, the mountainous and Apennine side, far removed from the region's most well-known tourist image.
