The Gewürztraminer festival among the vineyards of Termeno, the birthplace of South Tyrol's famous aromatic wine
The GewürzTRAMINer Wineday (known in German as Weinwandertag) is a food and wine festival held each spring to celebrate South Tyrol's most iconic wine in the municipality of Termeno sulla strada del vino (Tramin an der Weinstraße), in the province of Bolzano, within the Trentino-Alto Adige region. It is from this village overlooking Lake Caldaro that Gewürztraminer takes its name: an aromatic white wine with low acidity and unmistakable notes of rose, lychee, kumquat, bitter orange, and marzipan, now known and imitated worldwide.
In its traditional format, the event takes the form of a tasting walk along the Gewürztraminer Trail (Gewürztraminerweg), which leads from the ancient village of Betlemme through the almost Mediterranean landscape of the Termeno vineyards to the hamlet of Ronchi. Along the route, local wineries and distilleries set up tasting stations where visitors can sample over twenty selected Gewürztraminers and refined local Gewürztraminer grappas.
Wine tastings are paired with the finest South Tyrolean specialties. Gastronomic offerings include speck, alpine cheeses, polenta with sausage, and local apple juice, creating a pairing that reflects the agricultural and cultural identity of this wine-growing region. The experience can be rounded off with a visit to the Hoamet Tramin Museum, which houses a collection dedicated to Gewürztraminer from around the world.
The event is organized by the Termeno Tourist Association in collaboration with the local development agency, Standortentwicklung Tramin. In recent years, the format has evolved: alongside the traditional vineyard walk, the village has introduced a more convivial and exclusive version, the Gewürztraminer Dinner, a multi-course meal hosted in a historic mansion in the town center. In both formats, the core theme remains the same: to promote the signature grape variety of Termeno and introduce visitors to a wine that serves as a true calling card for the village.
The 2026 edition featured a change in format: instead of the traditional vineyard walk, Termeno hosted the Gewürztraminer Dinner, the second edition of the dinner dedicated to the aromatic wine, held on April 24, 2026, at Ansitz Romani. Chef Armin Pernstich created a refined five-course menu, ranging from spring appetizers to creative fish and meat dishes, all the way to dessert, with each course paired with wines selected by sommelier Paolo Tezzele. The tasting featured seven Gewürztraminers from Termeno, from classic interpretations to more modern styles, alongside Gewürztraminer grappas. The evening, which was completely sold out, confirmed the grape variety as a true calling card for the village, as noted by Ludwig Kaneppele of Standortentwicklung Tramin.
