About Tage der Romanik

Every second Sunday in October, the Romanesque Days (Tage der Romanik) bring South Tyrol to life: over thirty medieval churches, chapels, and castles open their doors with free guided tours. In Termeno sulla Strada del Vino, the heart of the event is the Church of San Giacomo in Kastelaz, a Romanesque jewel featuring one of the oldest fresco cycles in the Alps, complemented by the Chapel of San Valentino nestled among the vineyards.

Romanesque Days in Termeno

The Tage der Romanik (Romanesque Days) is an annual event held every second weekend of October, inviting visitors to discover the medieval heritage of South Tyrol along the Alpine Romanesque Road ("Stiegen zum Himmel"). Coordinated by IDM Südtirol - Alto Adige, the initiative opens the doors to over thirty cultural sites—churches, chapels, monasteries, and castles—offering free guided tours, lectures, and cultural walks. In Termeno sulla Strada del Vino (Tramin an der Weinstraße), in the province of Bolzano, the event is organized by the Termeno Tourist Association and centers on two authentic treasures of Romanesque art.

The Church of San Giacomo in Kastelaz

Perched on the Kastelaz hill above the village, the Church of San Giacomo (St. Jakob) is Termeno's most famous work of art and one of the most renowned in the entire region. Built between 1214 and 1220, it houses a Romanesque fresco cycle dating back to around 1220, among the oldest in the German-speaking world. The lower band features imaginative creatures—hybrids of humans and animals—with dog heads, bird or fish parts, and Greek-inspired centaurs, representing sin in contrast to the upper series depicting the twelve Apostles and Christ in Majesty. The side aisle also features Gothic paintings created by Ambrosius Gander in 1441.

The Chapel of San Valentino

The second key site is the Chapel of San Valentino (St. Valentin), set amidst the vineyards near the cemetery. Inside, it preserves a Passion cycle painted between 1380 and 1420, of rare intensity within the Alpine context. During the Romanesque Days, guided tours help visitors interpret these frescoes, illustrating their iconography and significance.

A blend of art, nature, and wine

In Termeno, the Romanesque Days are much more than a visit to monuments: they combine art, nature, and food and wine culture in a landscape defined by Gewürztraminer vineyards. Walks between the rows of vines lead from one building to another, offering views of the Bassa Atesina and Lake Caldaro. It is a slow and authentic way to experience the identity of this corner of South Tyrol, where medieval memory coexists with winemaking tradition.
