The South Tyrolean craft market in the center of San Michele in Appiano
In the historic center of San Michele, the main village of Appiano sulla Strada del Vino (Eppan an der Weinstraße) in the Province of Bolzano, the Event Markt SelberGMOCHT takes place, one of the most beloved South Tyrolean craft events. The dialect name SelberGMOCHT literally means "self-made": this is the market's promise, where every item for sale is produced directly by the artisan present at the stand.
Created as a platform to highlight the creativity of South Tyrolean producers, SelberGMOCHT organizes markets in various locations across the region, and Appiano hosts one of its most popular stops, in the heart of the Oltradige area, just a short walk from the renowned local wineries.
At each edition, over eighty producers — sometimes up to ninety — bring the town center to life with stalls full of original creations. Among the products you can admire and purchase:
The exhibitors are sculptors, seamstresses, beekeepers, painters, chocolatiers, and small-scale food producers, all united by the direct sale of what they create.
The market is more than just shopping: the day is accompanied by live music and a culinary selection curated by SelberGMOCHT producers and local San Michele establishments, featuring grilled specialties and typical South Tyrolean dishes. The atmosphere is that of a convivial and relaxed village market, perfect for a stroll among the stalls with the family.
Access to the market is free, and the event takes place regardless of weather conditions. Organized by the SelberGMOCHT association in collaboration with the Appiano Tourist Office, the market is usually held twice a year, once in spring and once in autumn, attracting visitors from all over South Tyrol.
The 2026 calendar for the SelberGMOCHT market in Appiano features two dates in the center of San Michele: Saturday, March 28, 2026 for the spring event and Saturday, October 24, 2026 for the autumn one. Both markets run from 09:00 to 16:30.
Over eighty South Tyrolean producers will bring the streets to life with handmade jewelry, felt slippers, natural cosmetics, wood carvings, honey, chocolate, and local specialties. The day is enriched by live music, with entertainment starting in the late morning, and a food selection featuring grilled specialties and typical local dishes. Free admission, in any weather.
