The ancient rite of transhumance comes to life in Vico del Gargano, amidst herds, pastures, and rustic flavors.
Some festivals capture the essence of a region better than any guidebook: the Gargano Transhumance Festival is one of them. Every spring, in Vico del Gargano (Province of Foggia, Puglia), the ancient rite of transhumance—the seasonal movement of herds to high pastures—comes to life before the eyes of its participants. This is no postcard-perfect re-enactment, but a genuine experience: you walk alongside the animals, breathe in the air of the Foresta Umbra, and rediscover the slow rhythm of Gargano's pastoral civilization.
The heart of the festival is the 7-kilometer walk that follows the herd along the road to Masseria U Sculér, in the evocative Gamba d'Oro area, on the edge of the Foresta Umbra. The farm, managed by young breeder Michele Totaro, becomes the center of a small rural world for a day. Visitors arrive on foot, often at dawn, to be welcomed with a rustic breakfast featuring local products like goat's milk and bread from Monte Sant'Angelo.
After arrival, the day is filled with ancient customs and knowledge to be passed down:
At noon, the rustic lunch, with food stalls managed by local producers, celebrates the authentic flavors of the Gargano. In the afternoon, the festival comes alive with music and dancing featuring the Cantatori e Suonatori del Gargano and live sets, in a community atmosphere that lasts until evening.
The Gargano Transhumance Festival is more than just a day outdoors: it is a way to mend the bond between humans, animals, and the land. Supported by the Puglia Region and the Gargano National Park, the event has quickly become a beloved appointment for those seeking an authentic experience, far from mass tourism circuits. Vico del Gargano, one of the most beautiful villages on the promontory, provides the ideal backdrop for this journey into Puglia's rural culture.
For the 2026 edition, the Gargano Transhumance Festival was held over a long weekend, from May 1st to 3rd, dedicated to the bond between the sea, the village, the Foresta Umbra, and rural traditions. The main day, Sunday, May 3rd, retraced the entire transhumance rite between the community of Vico del Gargano and Masseria U Sculér in the Gamba d'Oro area.
Masseria U Sculér, Gamba d'Oro area, Vico del Gargano (FG), on the edge of the Foresta Umbra in the Gargano National Park. Participants usually gather near the Villa Comunale of Vico del Gargano, with a transfer provided to the starting point of the walk.
By car: Vico del Gargano is accessible via the SS89 Garganica; it is about an hour and a half from Foggia. The nearest train station is served by Ferrovie del Gargano. Arriving early in the morning is recommended to follow the entire transhumance.
Participation is by reservation only and spots are limited. Wear comfortable shoes suitable for a 7 km walk. For information and bookings, please contact the organizers at the dedicated number.
