Christmas in the city of two UNESCO sites, between the Sanctuary of San Michele and the alleys of the Rione Junno
The Monte Sant'Angelo Christmas Festival is the major calendar of Christmas events that, every year from December 8th (Immaculate Conception) to January 6th (Epiphany), lights up the Gargano village of Monte Sant'Angelo, in the province of Foggia, in the heart of Puglia. The city, famous for the Sanctuary of San Michele Arcangelo and its Lombard district, both recognized by UNESCO as World Heritage sites, dresses up for the holidays for a month: illuminations, decorations, Christmas trees, and a dense program spread across squares, churches, the Villa Comunale, and the evocative Castle.
The festival does not have a single stage but thrives on many events scattered throughout the historic center. The beating heart is "La Via dei Presepi", the widespread itinerary that, between Christmas Eve and Epiphany, guides residents and visitors to discover the nativity scenes set up in the alleys of the Rione Junno and the most characteristic corners of the village. Surrounding this route are the Santa Claus Village, the Elf Playroom, the Befana Funfair, themed roving parades (from Disney characters to Cinderella), and scenic installations that transform squares like Piazza de Galganis into luminous landscapes thanks to videomapping.
The musical programming ranges from gospel to chamber music, from opera concerts to rock evenings hosted in indoor spaces. There is no shortage of bagpipers who, in the days leading up to Christmas, enliven the village streets with the sounds of the traditional Gargano pastoral music. Children's theater brings shows and fairy tales to the stage for families, while the popular dimension remains alive thanks to the pettolate — the collective preparation of the famous pettole, the Puglian Christmas fritters — organized by local associations and the city's Social Center.
The Christmas Festival is built by the Municipality of Monte Sant'Angelo together with a dense network of associations, parishes, Pro Loco, schools, and local businesses, with the support of the Puglia Region and the Gargano Internal Area. Alongside the shows, there is space for solidarity initiatives — from AVIS blood drives to visits to social-health facilities — that make the festival an occasion for participation and cohesion for the entire community.
Experiencing Christmas in Monte Sant'Angelo means walking through stone alleys, overlooking the Gulf of Manfredonia, and breathing in the spirituality of one of the oldest places of worship in Europe. It is an authentic Christmas, far from the large tourist flows, where Gargano tradition blends with the holiday atmosphere: almost all events are free and open to the public, designed both for locals and for those who travel up to the Gargano to discover the city of the Archangel.
The Monte Sant'Angelo Christmas Festival 2026 is confirmed from December 8, 2026, to January 6, 2027, as indicated in the annual calendar of events presented by the Municipality of Monte Sant'Angelo as part of the tourism promotion campaign "La Porta del Cielo, un'emozione da attraversare". 2026 is a special year for the Gargano city, which celebrates the 950th anniversary of the Bronze Doors of the Sanctuary of San Michele Arcangelo, and the Christmas program will ideally close this season of events.
Following in the footsteps of previous editions, the festival will offer a month of events spread throughout the historic center: the Via dei Presepi along the alleys of the Rione Junno, markets, illuminations and videomapping, the Santa Claus Village, roving parades, gospel and chamber music concerts, children's theater, bagpipers, and traditional pettolate. As per tradition, most events will have free admission.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition has not yet been published: it will be announced by the Municipality in the weeks leading up to the Immaculate Conception. This page will be updated with the full calendar as soon as it becomes available.
Monte Sant'Angelo is located on the Gargano promontory, in the province of Foggia. By car, it can be reached from Manfredonia along the SP55bis (about a 20-minute scenic climb). By train, the reference station is Foggia, then connected by bus lines (Ferrovie del Gargano/SITA) to Monte Sant'Angelo. The nearest airport is Bari-Palese, about 2 hours away.
Events animate the historic center: Villa Comunale, Piazza de Galganis, the Castle, the Rione Junno, and the main city churches. The Via dei Presepi winds along the alleys of the village.
Almost all events are free and open to the public. Some children's activities or guided tours may require booking at the municipal Info Point.
Bring comfortable shoes for the stone alleys and warm clothing: Monte Sant'Angelo is located at an altitude of about 800 meters, and winter temperatures are cold. Combine your visit with the Sanctuary of San Michele and the UNESCO Lombard district.
