A millennial devotion to the Archangel in the UNESCO village of the Gargano
In Monte Sant'Angelo, nestled in the heart of the Gargano in the province of Foggia, the Patronal Feast of Saint Michael the Archangel is more than just a religious celebration: it is the most authentic expression of a community's identity. According to tradition, the Archangel appeared several times on the Gargano starting in the 5th century, pointing to the grotto that now houses the Sanctuary of Saint Michael, a pilgrimage destination since the Middle Ages and a recognized UNESCO World Heritage site. Every year, at the end of September, the village gathers around its patron saint in a festival that blends faith, popular traditions, and entertainment.
The highlight of the festivities is the Procession of the Sacred Sword, which takes place on September 29th, the solemnity of the Archangel: the silver sword moves slowly through the streets of the historic center, accompanied by brass bands and the devotional gestures of the faithful, who greet the Saint by throwing flowers from their windows. In the preceding days, the ancient Rite of the Wax Offering is renewed, a gesture practiced since the second half of the 17th century by which the population entrusts Monte Sant'Angelo to the protection of the Angel, lighting a votive candle at the patron's feet on behalf of the entire city.
The September 29th recurrence draws traditional walking pilgrimages that converge toward the Sacred Grotto at night, starting from the four cardinal points of the promontory: from Vieste through the Foresta Umbra, from San Marco in Lamis, from Manfredonia, and from Mattinata. It is one of the most intense testimonies of Michaelic devotion in Europe, experienced in its most genuine form of prayer and pilgrimage.
Alongside the liturgical program, the festival comes alive with a historic agri-food fair that attracts exhibitors from across the region, featuring musical performances, illuminations that light up the village, and spectacular fireworks to close the festivities. The town squares host concerts and events that engage residents and visitors alike, in a spirit of sharing that makes the festival a meeting point for the entire community of the Municipality of Monte Sant'Angelo and Puglia.
Experiencing the Saint Michael Feast also means discovering one of Italy's most evocative villages, with its Sanctuary, the Junno district, the Norman-Swabian-Angevin Castle, and the panoramic views over the Gulf of Manfredonia. An ideal destination for those seeking spirituality, history, and tradition in one place.
The Patronal Feast of Monte Sant'Angelo will return from September 26 to 30, 2026, culminating in the solemnity of the Archangel on September 29 with the traditional Procession of the Sacred Sword. Anticipating the festivities, the evocative Historical Pageant of the Apparitions is scheduled for September 20. The year 2026 holds special significance: the city calendar, dedicated to the theme "The Gate of Heaven", commemorates 950 years since the casting of the famous Bronze Doors of the Sanctuary, created in Constantinople in 1076.
The complete civil and religious program, including times, events, and guests, will be published by the organizers in the weeks preceding the event. The identity-defining elements of the festival are confirmed: the Wax Offering, the fair, the illuminations, and the fireworks.
By car: from Foggia, reach Monte Sant'Angelo via the SS89 or SP55 through the Gargano; from Manfredonia, it is about 22 km of scenic road. By train: Foggia or Manfredonia station, then local bus to Monte Sant'Angelo. Nearest airport: Bari-Palese, about a 2-hour drive away.
The festivities are concentrated at the end of September, with the solemnity of the Archangel on September 29th.
The historic center is characterized by uphill alleys: comfortable shoes are recommended. During the procession, main streets may be closed to traffic. For the night pilgrimages toward the Sacred Grotto, a flashlight, reflective vest, and layered clothing are essential.
