A Nordic-style Christmas village in the heart of the Gargano

Every year during the Advent season, the center of San Giovanni Rotondo, in the province of Foggia, dresses up for the holidays, becoming one of the most scenic Christmas destinations in the Gargano area of Puglia. The Christmas Under the Stars event, established in 2015, turns Piazza del Municipio into an authentic Nordic village: typical wooden huts are built by master carpenters from Trentino, decorated with lights, lanterns, and poinsettias, while a massive eight-meter-tall tree, illuminated by over a thousand colorful bulbs, stands proudly in the center of the square.
Along Piazza del Municipio and Corso Umberto I, the markets offer local handicrafts, decorations, gift ideas, and gourmet specialties: cheeses, cured meats, traditional sweets, products from Trentino, mulled wine, and festive treats. The municipal cloister hosts a captivating nativity scene exhibition with free admission, showcasing both Neapolitan and local traditions. One of the most beloved spots for children is Santa's House, a reproduction of the one in Rovaniemi, where little ones can meet Santa Claus on scheduled days and deliver their letters.
The event goes far beyond a simple market: throughout the Christmas season, the city offers evening shows with street performers, jugglers, and bagpipers, as well as family entertainment and cultural activities. The calendar is designed to guide residents and visitors from the lighting of the tree through to Epiphany, all set against the backdrop of the snow-dusted Gargano.
Among the most anticipated moments are the New Year's Eve celebration in Piazza del Municipio, with music, sparkling wine, and panettone offered at midnight on December 31st, and the Befana who, on January 6th, makes a spectacular descent from the roof of the Town Hall to distribute stockings and sweets to all the children, marking a beautiful end to the celebrations.
As one of Italy's most frequented pilgrimage destinations thanks to the Sanctuary of Saint Pio of Pietrelcina, San Giovanni Rotondo reveals a festive and welcoming side during the holidays. Christmas Under the Stars has become a signature event for the entire Gargano district, drawing visitors from across the province of Foggia and all of Puglia, blending spirituality, tradition, and the charm of winter markets.
At the moment, the dates for the 2026 edition of Christmas Under the Stars have not yet been officially announced. The event is traditionally held in San Giovanni Rotondo (FG) during the Christmas season, from early December until Epiphany.
