The mushroom festival in the heart of the Madonie Park in Castelbuono
Now in its 20th year, the Funghi Fest is the autumn festival that transforms Castelbuono—a stunning medieval village in the Madonie Regional Natural Park, in the province of Palermo—into the Sicilian capital of mushrooms. Organized by the Promo Madonie Association with the support of the Municipality of Castelbuono, the Sicilian Region, and the Metropolitan City of Palermo, the event attracts thousands of visitors from all over Sicily every year.
At the heart of the festival is the Madonie mushroom, a true delicacy from the forests covering the mountain range of the same name. From porcini to other wild mushrooms foraged from the undergrowth, these local mycological treasures become the star ingredient in dishes prepared by chefs at stands set up along the streets and squares of the historic center. Alongside the mushrooms, you will find typical Madonie products—cheeses, cured meats, the famous manna, traditional sweets—and local wines, creating a culinary journey that showcases the food and wine identity of the Sicilian mountains.
The Funghi Fest is about more than just gastronomy. The program weaves together tastings and show cooking, taste workshops, exhibitions, conferences, and educational trails, as well as excursions and guided tours in the Madonie Park and the Civic Museum housed in the 14th-century Ventimiglia Castle. The evenings come alive with live music, concerts, street art performances, fire circus acts, and folk group parades, while street food and craft beers keep visitors entertained until late.
Dominated by the 14th-century Castle of Francesco I di Ventimiglia, Castelbuono is one of the most charming towns in the Madonie, rich in churches, palaces, and artisan traditions. The festival is the perfect opportunity to discover the village, its historical and artistic heritage, and the nature of the park during one of the most beautiful times of the year, when the forests are painted in autumn colors.
The Funghi Fest is held every year in October. The 20th edition in 2026 is scheduled from October 23 to 25, 2026, in the heart of the historic center of Castelbuono.
The 2026 edition of the Funghi Fest will be held in Castelbuono, in the Madonie Park (province of Palermo), from Friday, October 23 to Sunday, October 25, 2026. As every year, the historic center will host food stalls featuring dishes based on Madonie mushrooms and typical local products.
Alongside the tastings, the program includes show cooking, taste workshops, exhibitions, conferences, excursions, and guided tours in the park and at the Ventimiglia castle, as well as live music and evening performances. The detailed program with times, guests, and appointments will be announced by the Promo Madonie Association on the official website and social media channels in the weeks preceding the event.
By car: from Palermo, reach Castelbuono via the A20 Palermo-Messina motorway, take the Castelbuono exit, then follow the SS286 towards the interior of the Madonie; it is about 20 km from Cefalù. By train: the Castelbuono station is located on the Palermo-Messina line, connected to the historic center by a shuttle/bus service.
Access to the festival area in the historic center is free; tastings and dishes at the stalls are paid according to the vendors' price lists. Some activities (guided tours, excursions, workshops) may require booking.
We recommend comfortable clothing for visiting the village and the park areas. For accommodation, B&Bs and farmhouses (agriturismi) are available in Castelbuono and the neighboring Madonie municipalities.
