Nativity scenes, markets, and Christmas flavors in the heart of the Nebrodi mountains

Perched at an altitude of over 900 meters in the heart of the Nebrodi Park, Mistretta is one of the most charming villages in the province of Messina, Sicily. During the holidays, its historic center, filled with Baroque churches, noble palaces, and stone alleys, becomes the natural stage for the "Christmas in Mistretta" festival, a widespread program of events that accompanies residents and visitors from mid-December until Epiphany.
The heart of the event is the "Way of the Nativity Scenes and Flavors", an itinerary that combines the tradition of nativity scenes with gastronomy. Along the route, you can admire numerous nativity scenes set up not only in churches but also inside private homes, courtyards, and workshops in the historic center. In the most recent edition, about twenty-five nativity scenes were created, many enriched with messages of peace, which have revitalized alleys and neighborhoods that are often less frequented, highlighting the characteristic corners of the village.
The itinerary is accompanied by Christmas markets and the opportunity to savor local culinary traditions, with a tasting point set up in Largo Progresso. The soundtrack of the holidays is provided by traditional instruments, particularly the sound of the zampogna (bagpipe), and musical moments with artists and gospel choirs. Among the most anticipated events is the living nativity scene, which reconstructs scenes of the Nativity through the streets of the town.
More than just a festival, "Christmas in Mistretta" is an immersive experience in the atmosphere of high-altitude Sicilian Christmas: craftsmanship, popular devotion, culinary aromas, and musical traditions blend into a journey that invites you to slowly rediscover the village. The event is promoted by the Municipality of Mistretta with the involvement of parishes, associations, and citizens, and is designed for both local families and visitors choosing the Nebrodi as a winter holiday destination.
The 2026 edition of "Christmas in Mistretta" has not yet been officially confirmed. Based on previous years, the festival takes place in the historic center of the Nebrodi village between December and early January, with the nativity scene trail among churches and private homes, markets, and tastings in Largo Progresso. The exact dates, the concert calendar, and the events of the Way of the Nativity Scenes and Flavors will be communicated by the Municipality of Mistretta in the weeks leading up to the holidays.
Mistretta is located in the heart of the Nebrodi, in the province of Messina. By car, it can be reached from the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway (exits Santo Stefano di Camastra or Sant'Agata di Militello), continuing on internal roads towards the mountain interior. The nearest train station is Santo Stefano di Camastra-Mistretta, on the Tyrrhenian coast.
The events take place in the historic center of Mistretta during the Christmas period, with markets and tastings concentrated in Largo Progresso. Admission to the nativity scene trail and markets is free.
