The Ferla mushroom festival in the heart of the Madonie
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Fungo Ferla Fest is one of the most beloved autumn festivals in the Madonie, held in the village of Caltavuturo, in the province of Palermo, Sicily. The event celebrates the Ferla mushroom (Pleurotus eryngii var. ferulae), locally known as "funciu di ferra," a genuine, wild variety that grows on the roots of the ferula plant in the hills bordering the provinces of Palermo, Caltanissetta, and Enna. For two days, the town's historic center transforms into a culinary trail filled with stalls, restaurants, and lively squares.
The Ferla mushroom is the true king of the festival: a signature product of the local woods, it is featured in numerous traditional Sicilian peasant recipes. Along the village streets, visitors can sample dishes made with mushrooms and wild greens, alongside other local specialties prepared by Caltavuturo's chefs and producers. The event aims to highlight the biodiversity of the Madonie and promote food and wine tourism in this corner of the Palermitan hinterland.
The Fungo Ferla Fest is more than just a food festival; it is an experience that blends taste, nature, and culture. Recent programs have included:
Caltavuturo sits against the backdrop of the Rocca di Sciara, in a panoramic position among the Madonie mountains. The festival, which attracts visitors from across the island, is also the perfect opportunity to discover the village, its narrow alleys, and the natural landscape of the Madonie Park during the most evocative time of autumn. The event is promoted in collaboration with the Municipality of Caltavuturo and local associations.
