Two days of nature, tradition, and authentic flavours in the village of Sant'Ambrogio
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Arbutus Festival takes place every autumn in the village of Sant'Ambrogio, a hamlet of the Municipality of Cefalù, in the province of Palermo, at the gateway to the Madonie Park. For two days, the small centre becomes a meeting point for residents and visitors alike, united by a desire to rediscover the nature, traditions, and authentic flavours of this corner of Sicily.
The absolute star is the arbutus, a shrub typical of the Mediterranean scrub that, in autumn, paints the woods around Sant'Ambrogio in shades of yellow, orange, and red. Its fruits, also known in Sicily as mbriaculo, owe their curious nickname to the light natural fermentation that develops a small amount of alcohol in the ripe berries: hence the famous legend of the drunken fox. The festival was created precisely to promote this plant, a symbol of the territory's biodiversity, and the products derived from it.
Among the most popular experiences are the guided walks in the Bosco di Guarneri, accompanied by the operators of the Palma Nana cooperative. The excursions allow you to observe the arbutus trees in full bloom and fruit up close and to learn about the flora and fauna of the Mediterranean scrub, in an atmosphere suitable for both adults and children.
The programme includes creative workshops for all ages, tastings of typical products made with arbutus — from jams to artisanal pastries, fresh bread to croissants — and craft markets featuring local producers. There is also live music and entertainment, making your time in the village even more engaging.
The event, organised by the Associazione Riscopri Sant'Ambrogio, offers free admission: you are welcome to leave a voluntary donation to support community activities and future projects dedicated to the enhancement of the territory. Now in its several editions, the Arbutus Festival has established itself as one of the most characteristic autumn events in the Cefalù area.
The 2026 edition of the Arbutus Festival in Sant'Ambrogio di Cefalù does not yet have official dates. The event is normally held in November and, in continuity with previous editions, is expected to feature guided walks in the Bosco di Guarneri, creative workshops, tastings of typical arbutus products, and live music. The detailed programme will be published by the organisers in the weeks leading up to the event.
Sant'Ambrogio is a hillside hamlet of Cefalù, accessible by car via the SS113 and the network of inland roads leading towards the Madonie. Cefalù is served by the railway station on the Palermo-Messina line; from there, you can continue by car to the village. The nearest airports are Palermo-Punta Raisi and, to a lesser extent, Catania-Fontanarossa.
Participation is free. For some activities and guided walks, a voluntary donation to support the community is appreciated.
We recommend comfortable clothing and shoes suitable for walking in the woods. The event takes place in November: it is best to bring warm clothing and a raincoat.
