The festival that unlocks the palaces, churches, and hidden corners of the city of Caltanissetta
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Le Vie dei Tesori is the largest widespread festival dedicated to cultural heritage in Southern Italy. Born in Palermo in 2006, it has expanded over the years to dozens of Sicilian cities. In Caltanissetta, the capital of the province in the heart of Sicily, the event has been a staple since 2017. For a few weekends in autumn, noble palaces, churches, crypts, museums, and normally inaccessible places open their doors to the public, narrated by volunteers and young ciceroni (guides) who lead visitors through art, history, and memory.
For over a century, Caltanissetta was the Italian capital of sulfur. The festival restores this identity by taking visitors inside the palaces of the mining bourgeoisie and the homes that later became cultural salons. Among the featured sites in recent editions: Palazzo Moncada, the unfinished Baroque jewel of the family that once dominated the city, hosting temporary exhibitions; Palazzo Giordano on Corso Vittorio Emanuele, which hosted Ferdinand II of Bourbon in 1838; the 18th-century crypt of San Domenico, with the colatoi (drainage niches) where the bodies of the noble Moncada family were dried; the birthplace of sculptor Michele Tripisciano, restored by the Municipality; and the studio-atelier of artist Carlo Sillitti, now a cultural salon.
Alongside the site openings, the festival offers guided walks in the historic center and experiences dedicated to the flavors and knowledge of the territory: from visits to the masters of the local torrone (nougat) to discovering olive oil production, and even cycling itineraries tracing the history of mining archaeology. It is a way to experience Caltanissetta not as a mere stopover, but as a city to be lived slowly.
Access to the sites is managed via coupons that can be purchased online on the official website or at information points set up in the city: a formula that allows you to build your own itinerary among the open treasures. The event is promoted by the Le Vie dei Tesori association with the support of the Municipality of Caltanissetta and the Department of Culture, and is part of the broader regional program that involves over fifteen cities in Sicily every autumn.
At the moment, the dates and program for the 2026 edition of Le Vie dei Tesori in Caltanissetta have not yet been announced.
