About Feast of Maria SS. di Costantinopoli

Every year, between late February and early March, Bitritto gathers around its patron saint, Maria SS. di Costantinopoli, who has been venerated in the town since 1656. The patronal festival, which reaches its peak on the first Tuesday of March, weaves together the sacred and the secular: a novena, a solemn procession through the town center, brass band concerts under the bandstand, artistic illuminations, a traditional fair, an amusement park, and a spectacular daytime fireworks display that draws thousands of devotees and visitors from the province of Bari every year.

The Patron Saint of Bitritto

In the heart of the Metropolitan City of Bari, the small town of Bitritto has been celebrating its protector, Maria Santissima di Costantinopoli, for centuries. This devotion is rooted in an ancient Apulian tradition linked to Byzantine Odegitria icons, but it is primarily the memory of past epidemics that binds the town to the Virgin: following the plague of 1528-29, the community vowed to build a church in her honor, and after surviving another outbreak, they officially proclaimed her patron saint in 1656. Since then, Bitritto has renewed that vow every year with days of intense celebration.

A Ritual Between Sacred and Secular

The festivities begin with a novena in the Mother Church dedicated to her and culminate on the first Tuesday of March, the highlight of the celebration. In the morning, a solemn Eucharistic concelebration precedes the procession, when the venerated statue of the Madonna is carried on shoulders through the streets of the historic center, amidst a crowd of devotees, emigrants returning for the occasion, and faithful from neighboring towns. A poignant moment is the symbolic handing over of the city keys in Piazza Aldo Moro, a gesture that renews the community's entrustment to its protector.

Brass Bands and the Bandstand

The secular side of the festival is dominated by the great Apulian brass band tradition. Under the scenic bandstand set up in the square, renowned brass ensembles invited from nearby cities perform operatic and symphonic transcriptions in a musical ritual deeply loved in Southern Italy. The program also includes evening musical performances, the characteristic distribution of blessed bread, and, since 2019, a historical pageant in costume that re-enacts the origins of the devotion.

Illuminations, Fair, and Fireworks

The town streets light up with monumental artistic illuminations, authentic architectures of light that are a source of pride for Apulian craftsmanship. A fair with traditional stalls winds through the streets, while an amusement park for families comes to life in the Palatour area. The spectacular climax is the great daytime fireworks competition, where the best companies in the region challenge each other with sound and color, attracting enthusiasts from all over the Terra di Bari.

Bitritto and the Festival

Organized by the Maria SS. di Costantinopoli Parish together with the Patronal Festival Committee, the Confraternity, and with the patronage of the Municipality of Bitritto, the festival is much more than a religious appointment: it is the moment when the entire community recognizes itself in its own identity. In an Apulian calendar rich in patronal festivals, the one in Bitritto ideally opens the season, uniting faith, music, tradition, and conviviality in the name of the Madonna di Costantinopoli for centuries.

The 2026 Patronal Festival

The festivities in honor of Maria SS. di Costantinopoli were held in Bitritto from February 22 to March 4, 2026, according to the established tradition that sets the climax on the first Tuesday of March. The preparatory novena in the Mother Church led the community to the solemn day of Tuesday, March 3.

The highlight of the day featured the solemn Eucharistic concelebration, the characteristic launch of the hot-air balloon, and the procession of the venerated statue through the town streets. Among the musical events, the brass band concerts of the Cities of Bitritto and Bisceglie, conducted by Maestro Benedetto Grillo, filled the square under the bandstand.

Great anticipation, as every year, for the daytime fireworks competition and the traditional Fire of Charity in the early afternoon, while the artistic illuminations, the fair, and the amusement park in the Palatour area completed the rich calendar between sacred and secular.
