The devotional festival of Montrone, held on the first Sunday of September
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Madonna della Pietà Festival is the most significant religious event for the community of Montrone, one of the two historic villages that, along with Canneto, make up the municipality of Adelfia, in the province of Bari, in the heart of Puglia. Maria Santissima della Pietà is venerated as the co-patron of Montrone, and her festival, celebrated every year on the first Sunday of September, draws families, returning emigrants, and pilgrims from neighboring towns to the village.
The devotional heart of the festival is the Pietà Chapel, known to locals as the "Madonnella," located along the road to Casamassima. Its origins date back to an ancient votive shrine; over the centuries, it was expanded and embellished, once housing a painting depicting the Deposition from the Cross. Restored and rebuilt several times by the community, the chapel remains the symbolic destination of the procession and a testament to the deep bond between the people of Montrone and their protector.
The most anticipated moment is the Sunday evening procession, when the statue of the Madonna is carried on shoulders through the village streets, accompanied by the moving participation of the faithful. On Monday, the festival reaches its climax: the sacred image is placed on a characteristic flower-adorned float and taken in procession to the Pietà Chapel, before returning to the Mother Church. The flower-lined route, the sound of the brass band, and the crowd's devotion make this day an intense and evocative experience.
Organized by the San Trifone Patronal Festival Committee, the Madonna della Pietà Festival blends spiritual and community dimensions in a ritual passed down through generations. It is a precious opportunity to discover the identity of Montrone and Adelfia and to experience the authentic popular religiosity of the Bari region.
The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced: the festival is traditionally held on the first Sunday of September and the following Monday.
The San Trifone Patronal Festival Committee has not yet released the official calendar for the 2026 edition of the Madonna della Pietà Festival in Montrone. The event is traditionally held on the first Sunday of September, with the evening shoulder-carried procession of the statue, followed on Monday by the evocative procession of the flower-adorned float to the Pietà chapel and the return to the Mother Church. The program, schedule, and side events will be released by the committee in the weeks leading up to the festival.
Adelfia is located about 15 km south of Bari. By car, it can be reached via the SS 100 Bari-Taranto road, taking the exit for Adelfia. By train, the Ferrovie del Sud Est line connects Bari to Adelfia; the village of Montrone is just a few minutes from the station. The nearest airport is Bari-Palese "Karol Wojtyła".
The celebrations are centered at the Mother Church of Montrone and along the village streets, with the procession reaching the Pietà Chapel on the road to Casamassima.
Admission to the celebrations and processions is free. We recommend arriving in the village early on the evening of the procession, as the town center becomes very crowded with locals and visitors.
