The August festival in Palo del Colle featuring devotion, illuminations, and entertainment in Piazza Dante

In the heart of summer, the town of Palo del Colle, located in the province of Bari in the heart of Puglia, unites around one of its most deep-rooted traditions: the San Rocco Festival. Traditionally celebrated around August 16th, the saint's liturgical day, the festival combines the figure of Saint Roch with that of the Holy Physicians Cosmas and Damian, who are also highly venerated by the local community. For generations, it has been affectionately called the "festival of the poor," a testament to its popular and rural roots.
The heart of the festival is the Church (Rectory) of San Rocco, which dates back to the 16th century, when it was a small rural chapel. The Confraternity of San Rocco formed around it; documented for over two centuries, it still organizes and preserves the festivities today. As the confreres, led by the prior, remind us, true devotion belongs to the people: the confraternity considers itself merely an instrument of a faith passed down from father to son.
The religious program begins in the days leading up to the event and culminates on August 16th with morning masses, the morning salute, and the official opening of the festivities, followed by the solemn procession through the town streets, accompanied by a brass band. Many customs are linked to the festival: the family lunch that once preceded the procession, the dressing of the statue by devoted families, and the ancient charity procession, during which blessed bread was brought to the elderly, the sick, and those unable to attend.
On the secular side, the festival lights up the center with famous illuminations, opens local craft and food markets, and offers brass band concerts, fireworks, and hot air balloon launches. The hub of the evenings is the central Piazza Dante, which hosts free music and comedy shows with national guests on August 17th and 18th. A tradition that, while evolving over time, continues to bring all generations of Palo del Colle together.
The 2026 edition of the San Rocco Festival in Palo del Colle does not yet have an official program. Information will be updated as soon as the Confraternity of San Rocco announces the schedule of religious and secular festivities, traditionally celebrated around August 16th in honor of Saint Roch and the Holy Physicians.
The celebrations take place in the historic center of Palo del Colle (BA), between the Church of San Rocco, the town streets, and Piazza Dante, the heart of the evening entertainment.
The festival is traditionally held around August 16th, with the main secular evenings on August 17th and 18th.
Shows in Piazza Dante are historically free of charge.
Palo del Colle is about 20 km from Bari and can be reached by car via the SS96 and SP231, or by train using the Bari-Nord line.
