The Patronal Feast of Saint Michael the Archangel is the most anticipated event of the year in Bitetto, a small town in the Metropolitan City of Bari, in the heart of Apulia. Every year, coinciding with the liturgical day of September 29th, the entire community gathers around its Patron Saint with a celebration that weaves together religious devotion and popular festivities, following a ritual renewed for generations. The celebrations traditionally take place on September 28th, 29th, and 30th and involve the entire town, from the medieval historic center to the main squares.
The most solemn moment is the procession of the statue of Saint Michael the Archangel, which travels through the streets of the old town, carried on shoulders amidst the crowd of faithful, accompanied by prayers, hymns, and the ringing of the bells of the Cathedral of Saint Michael the Archangel. The imposing mother church, a splendid example of Apulian Romanesque architecture built in the 14th century by order of Bishop Giacomo II Bonocore, serves as the backdrop for the liturgical celebrations: the solemn Holy Masses mark the days of the festival, drawing numerous devotees from neighboring towns.
Alongside the sacred rites, Apulian tradition finds expression in the civil program organized by the Bitetto Patronal Feast Committee. The town streets light up with characteristic artistic illuminations—authentic light architectures typical of Southern Italy—while the bandstand installed in the square hosts brass band concerts, the heart of Apulian folk music. There is no shortage of entertainment, and to conclude the festivities, fireworks light up the sky over Bitetto.
Beyond the devotion to the Archangel, Bitetto is known for housing the remains of Blessed Giacomo, a Franciscan lay brother whose body has remained incorrupt over the centuries, attracting many pilgrims. The Patronal Feast is therefore a precious opportunity to discover an authentic corner of the Bari province, its Romanesque heritage, and the hospitality of the Apulian people, in a festive atmosphere that unites the sacred and the profane in the most genuine way.
The 2026 Patronal Feast of Saint Michael the Archangel in Bitetto will follow, according to tradition, the liturgical recurrence of September 29th. The official program of civil and religious festivities has not yet been published: the dates and the detailed calendar will be communicated by the Bitetto Patronal Feast Committee in the weeks preceding the event. Please refer to the official channels of the Municipality and the parish for updates.
The celebrations take place in the historic center of Bitetto (Metropolitan City of Bari), centered around the Cathedral of Saint Michael the Archangel and the main town squares (including Piazza Aldo Moro).
By car: Bitetto is about 15 km from Bari, accessible via the SS96 and SP231 roads. By train: the Bitetto-Palo del Colle station is served by the Ferrovie del Nord Barese (Ferrotramviaria) on the Bari-Barletta line. Nearest airport: Bari-Palese (about 20 km).
Participation in the patronal festivities is free. Arriving early is recommended to witness the procession and the bandstand concerts.
