The patron saint festival of Valenzano, blending faith, baroque pageantry, and fireworks

The San Rocco Patronal Feast is the most anticipated event of the year in Valenzano, a town in the Bari hinterland, in the Province of Bari, in the heart of Apulia. San Rocco, the pilgrim saint invoked against epidemics, is the protector of the Valenzano community: for a few days, the town pauses its daily routine and gathers around his statue amidst popular faith, tradition, and grand public festivities.
The bond between Valenzano and San Rocco dates back to 1656, the year of the terrible plague epidemic that ravaged Bari and many neighboring towns. On October 27th of that year, the mayor and city councilors solemnly dedicated Valenzano to the Saint, who, according to tradition, spared the town from the contagion. The vow included the perpetual celebration of a mass in his honor: since then, devotion to San Rocco has become part of the city's identity, preserved in the church dedicated to him, now part of the Archdiocese of Bari-Bitonto.
The most solemn moment of the feast is the procession of the large statue of San Rocco, which travels through the main streets of the historic center followed by a river of faithful in prayer. The symbolic heart of the festivities is the handing over of the city keys to the Saint by the Mayor: a gesture representing the entry of San Rocco within the city walls and the affectionate welcome of the people of Valenzano, renewing the ancient pact of protection every year.
Alongside the religious dimension, the festival is also about color and joy: illuminations light up the streets, brass bands and orchestras accompany the days, and stalls selling nougat and local products enliven the squares. To close the evenings, the highly anticipated fireworks light up the sky of Valenzano with their thunder and colors. Over the years, the festival has also been enriched by an evocative baroque historical pageant, a re-enactment of the Saint's miraculous intercession, and free concerts by nationally renowned artists on Corso Aldo Moro.
Traditionally, the feast is celebrated in mid-August, between the 15th and 17th, with August 16thโthe day of the pilgrim saint's deathโas the highlight. However, dates may vary: in 2025, for example, the festivities were exceptionally postponed to September. It is always advisable to check the updated calendar on the channels of the Valenzano Patronal Feast Committee before planning your visit.
The San Rocco Patronal Feast will return in 2026 to Valenzano, in the Province of Bari, to renew the devotion to the patron saint with the procession, the handing over of the city keys, and the traditional evenings of celebration. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced: the calendar and the program (concerts, baroque historical pageant, fireworks) will be communicated by the Valenzano Patronal Feast Committee closer to the event. We recommend checking for updates on the official channels before planning your visit.
Valenzano is located a few kilometers south of Bari. By car, it can be reached via the SS100 (Bari-Taranto) taking the exit for Valenzano. By train and bus, it is connected to the capital by the Bari metropolitan area public transport; the reference airport is Bari-Palese.
The festivities enliven the historic center, the main streets of the town, and Corso Aldo Moro, where the evening concerts are held.
Religious events, concerts in the square, and fireworks are free to attend. On concert evenings, it is recommended to arrive early to find a spot and to park in areas outside the center, which is partially closed to traffic.
