The patronal feast of Casamassima in honor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Madonna del Carmine Patronal Feast is the most anticipated religious and civic event of the year in Casamassima, a town in the Metropolitan City of Bari, Apulia, also known as the "Blue Town" for the color that tints many facades of its charming historic center. The town pays homage to its patron saint, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, with two days that combine the community's centuries-old devotion with the grand civic celebrations typical of Apulian festivals.
The most solemn moment is the procession of the Sacred Image through the town's streets. During the parade, one of the most characteristic rituals of the feast is renewed: the symbolic handing over of the "Keys of the City" to the Madonna by the Mayor at Porta Orologio, through which the entire community entrusts itself to its Patroness. The procession winds from the Church of Purgatorio along Via Conservatorio, Via Castello, Via Don Liborio, Via Farini, Via Santa Chiara, Piazza San Francesco, Largo Lago, Corso Umberto, and Via Chiesa until it reaches the Mother Church, accompanied by Eucharistic celebrations presided over by the ecclesiastical authorities of the Diocese of Altamura-Gravina-Acquaviva delle Fonti.
Alongside the liturgical program, the civic program unfolds as the heart of the public festival. The absolute stars are the brass band concerts, with renowned Apulian touring bands performing in the traditional bandstand: in recent years, prestigious groups such as the City of Bisceglie band, the Municipal Concert of Francavilla Fontana, and the "Tommaso Traetta" band of Bitonto have taken turns. The historic center lights up with typical artistic luminarie (light displays), while families crowd the funfair set up in Piazzale Baden Powell.
The festival culminates with the grand fireworks display in Largo Fellini, scheduled around midnight on the final day, one of the most beloved and well-attended events by the locals. Also evocative is the launch of the hot-air balloon which, according to ancient popular devotion, rises into the night sky upon the return of the procession.
Devotion to the Madonna del Carmine is rooted in Carmelite spirituality and represents a strong identity element for Casamassima. Every summer, the festival draws emigrants and visitors from neighboring towns, transforming the streets of the old village into a tapestry of sacred rites, music, gastronomy, and conviviality that renews the deep bond between the community and its Patroness.
The dates for the 2026 edition of the Madonna del Carmine Patronal Feast in Casamassima have not yet been made official. Based on the custom of recent years, the festivities in honor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel are held in the month of July and include solemn processions with the rite of handing over the city keys, grand Apulian brass band concerts, illuminations in the historic center, and the closing fireworks display in Largo Fellini.
The detailed program with dates, times, and band lineups will be published by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event. It is recommended to check the official festival website and the channels of the Municipality of Casamassima for updates.
The festival takes place in the historic center of Casamassima (BA), between the Church of Purgatorio and the Mother Church. The fireworks display is held in Largo Fellini, and the funfair is in Piazzale Baden Powell.
