The patron saint festival in the heart of Modugno, blending faith, brass bands, and illuminations

The Patronal Feast of Saint Roch and Saint Nicholas of Tolentino is the most anticipated event of the year for the community of Modugno, a town in the metropolitan area of Bari, Apulia. Every September, the historic center is transformed: the main streets are adorned with festive lights, squares fill with market stalls, and popular devotion intertwines with civic celebrations in a collective ritual that has been repeated for centuries.
Saint Nicholas of Tolentino has been the official patron of Modugno since 1657, when the community chose him as its protector. Alongside him, the city venerates Saint Roch of Montpellier, long invoked as a protector against epidemics. The festival unites these two figures in a single grand celebration that marks the end of the Modugno summer, balancing moments of reflection with vibrant popular participation.
The spiritual heart of the festival lies in the solemn celebrations at the Mother Church and the processions that wind through the town center with the statues of the patron saints. The final procession, dedicated to Saint Nicholas of Tolentino, is the most moving moment: accompanied by civil and military authorities, it concludes with the evocative ritual of the mayor presenting the city keys to the Saint in Piazza Sedile, set against the backdrop of the bandstand and the release of hot-air balloons.
Beyond the religious rites, the civic program brings the best of Apulian festival tradition to the streets: brass band parades, concerts in the bandstand, musical performances, market stalls selling crafts and sweets, a funfair for families, and spectacular firework displays that light up the Modugno sky. The artistic illuminations decorating Corso Vittorio Emanuele and the central squares are among the most photographed and beloved elements of the event.
Organized by the Unified Patronal Feast Committee with the support of the Municipality of Modugno, the festival is a free event open to all, attracting residents, returning emigrants, and visitors from neighboring towns. For Modugno, it represents the beating heart of community identity: an opportunity to rediscover the religious and popular roots of an entire town.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition of the Patronal Feast of Saint Roch and Saint Nicholas of Tolentino has not yet been published. Following tradition, the festival will take place in September in the historic center of Modugno, featuring the usual blend of religious rites and civic festivities. This page will be updated as soon as the Unified Patronal Feast Committee releases the official dates and program.
The festival takes place in the historic center of Modugno (BA), with its epicenter in Piazza Sedile and along Corso Vittorio Emanuele, Piazza del Popolo, and Piazza Capitaneo. Religious celebrations are held in the Mother Church.
