The solemnity of the Patron Saint of Bari amidst faith, torches, and traditions of the Old Town
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
December 6 is one of the most significant dates on the Bari calendar: it is the liturgical solemnity of Saint Nicholas, the Patron Saint of Bari and a figure revered throughout the Christian world, both in the West and in the Orthodox tradition. Unlike the grand Feast of Saint Nicholas in May, which is linked to the translation of the relics, the December 6 commemoration marks the dies natalis of the Saint and carries a more intimate, local character, deeply rooted in the life of the Apulian capital's community.
Celebrations start in the dead of night, when the Pontifical Basilica of Saint Nicholas in the Old Town opens its doors to the faithful around 4:00 AM. The popular call comes from the Sant'Antonio Pier, with the traditional firing of pyrotechnic salutes echoing along the waterfront, and from the bagpipers of the Terra di Bari, who roam the alleys of the historic center, filling the air with melodies that announce the approach of Christmas.
A defining moment of the day is the Nicolaian Torchlight Procession, which reached its 32nd edition in 2025: a non-competitive running pilgrimage in the name of peace, legality, and fraternity, with participants setting off from various points in the city to converge, torch in hand, toward Piazza San Nicola at dawn.
Throughout the day, numerous Holy Masses are held in the Basilica, while the streets of the Old Town come alive with brass band concerts from towns in the province. Among the most beloved civil rites is the handing over of the city keys to Saint Nicholas by the Mayor of Bari, a symbolic gesture entrusting the capital to the protection of its Patron, alongside the ancient custom of maritaggi, donations dedicated to the Nicolaian tradition. The procession of the sacred effigy of the Saint then winds through the historic center accompanied by music, before the grand evening fireworks display from the Sant'Antonio Pier.
It is no coincidence that December 6 in Bari coincides with the switching on of the Christmas lights and the opening of the city's holiday program: after all, Saint Nicholas is the figure from whom the very tradition of Santa Claus derives. Experiencing this day in the Old Town, amidst hot pettole, chocolate, and the scent of incense in the Basilica, means entering the authentic heart of the Bari and Apulian identity.
The solemnity of Saint Nicholas recurs every year on December 6. The detailed program for the 2026 edition (celebration times, band routes, torchlight procession, and fireworks) has not yet been announced: it will be published by the Pontifical Basilica and the Municipality of Bari in the weeks leading up to the event.
The dates and the detailed program for the 2026 edition of the Saint Nicholas Feast on December 6 have not yet been published. The commemoration, which marks the beginning of the Christmas festivities in Bari, will likely follow the established pattern: nighttime opening of the Pontifical Basilica, Holy Masses, Nicolaian Torchlight Procession, routes of the bagpipers and bands in the Old Town, handing over of the city keys to the Saint, procession of the sacred effigy, and fireworks display from the Sant'Antonio Pier. The official calendar will be released in the weeks preceding the event.
Pontifical Basilica of Saint Nicholas, Old Town of Bari (Province of Bari, Apulia). Celebrations also involve Piazza San Nicola, the alleys of the historic center, and the Sant'Antonio Pier on the waterfront.
The Old Town is reachable on foot from the Bari central station in about 20 minutes. During the festival days, traffic restrictions are in place in the historic center, and the AMTAB bus service is reinforced: it is recommended to leave your car in peripheral parking lots and continue by public transport.
Participation in the celebrations, the procession, and the fireworks display is free and open to all.
The main celebrations begin before dawn: dress in layers for the December cold and arrive early, as the Basilica and the alleys fill up quickly with the faithful and onlookers.
