The grand celebration of Toritto's patron saints, blending faith, a triumphal float, and local tradition

In the calendar of Toritto, a small town in the Province of Bari nestled between the Murgia plateau and the almond groves, there is no event more anticipated than the Patronal Feast of Maria SS. delle Grazie and Saint Roch. Every year, around the first Sunday of September, the entire community comes together to celebrate its two protectors with a festival that weaves together popular faith, historical memory, and vibrant public participation. It is the moment when the town, having concluded the almond harvest, embraces days of celebration that feel like a fresh start.
The origins of the cult date back to the early 18th century, when a typhus epidemic threatened this part of Puglia. The people of Toritto turned to the protection of the Madonna delle Grazie and Saint Roch, the pilgrim saint traditionally invoked against epidemics, and since then, the two patrons have been celebrated without fail. The Madonna delle Grazie, already venerated as Madonna dell'Acqua during periods of drought and invoked to protect the town even during the bombings of the Second World War, is deeply tied to the identity of Toritto.
The spectacular heart of the festival is the triumphal float, rebuilt in its current form in 1996: a votive structure several meters high, pulled by twelve men from Toritto, carrying the image of the Madonna as if elevating her toward the sky. Accompanying the processions is a striking historical pageant featuring confraternities in traditional attire, parish groups, and civil authorities, while the silver statue of Saint Roch is carried on shoulders through the streets of the center.
Alongside the religious dimension, the festival offers the classic repertoire of the great Southern patronal feasts: illuminations that transform the streets into galleries of light, brass band concerts and musical performances in the square, carnival rides, and stalls, culminating in the fireworks that close the evenings. Organized by the Toritto Festival Committee, the event also draws back many emigrants from Toritto who return for the occasion, making these days an authentic community celebration.
Participating in the festival is also the perfect chance to get to know Toritto and its surroundings: from the almonds, a local culinary treasure, to the rural landscape of the Bari Murgia. Visitors from outside will find a welcoming town that experiences the festival with intensity and gladly opens its doors to guests.
The Patronal Feast of Maria SS. delle Grazie and Saint Roch returns in 2026 to Toritto, in the heart of the Province of Bari. The official dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced: the festival is traditionally held around the first Sunday of September, and the complete program is published by the Toritto Festival Committee in the preceding weeks.
While awaiting the final calendar, the structure of the feast is well-established: novena and liturgical celebrations, the solemn procession with the triumphal float carried on the shoulders of twelve local men and the silver statue of Saint Roch, the historical pageant of the confraternities in traditional attire, brass band concerts, illuminations, and fireworks. To find out the dates and the detailed program, it is recommended to follow updates on the portal torittonline.it and the social media pages of the Toritto Festival Committee.
The celebrations take place in the historic center of Toritto (BA), between the Mother Church of San Nicola, the church of the Madonna delle Grazie, and the main squares and streets of the town.
