The Patronal Feast of Saint Roch of Montpellier is the most anticipated event of the year in Casamassima, a town in the Metropolitan City of Bari, in the heart of Apulia. For centuries, the community has honored Saint Roch, the lay pilgrim venerated as the saint of charity and peace, who was proclaimed the town's protector. Every September, the village transforms into a grand stage for faith and tradition, drawing devotees and visitors from neighboring towns.
The religious heart of the festival is centered at the Mother Church and the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie. The festivities are preceded by the novena, nine days of prayer that prepare the community for the solemnity. The highlight is the solemn procession with the image of Saint Roch and the relic of the Holy Cross, which winds through the historic center along festively decorated streets. The Sunday procession is particularly evocative, as the faithful accompany the Saint with candles and massive votive tapers, a gesture of devotion passed down through generations. The procession also visits the cemetery to honor the community's departed.
Alongside the religious observances, a rich secular program unfolds. Multicolored illuminations light up the squares and main streets, while brass band concerts bring the days to life with the great traveling bands of the Apulian tradition. There is no shortage of popular entertainment, such as dancing fountains and the release of a hot air balloon, and of course, the funfair that welcomes families and children. The most spectacular moment is the fireworks competition at midnight, which closes the festivities with a long pyrotechnic display highly anticipated by enthusiasts.
The Feast of Saint Roch is much more than a religious anniversary: it is the moment when the identity of Casamassima is renewed. Families reunite, Casamassima natives living away return home, and the streets of the center fill with stalls, local flavors, and music. Organized by the Saint Roch Casamassima Feast Committee in collaboration with the Parish and the Municipality, the festival represents a heritage of faith and popular culture that continues to unite an entire community.
The official program of the 2026 Feast of Saint Roch in Casamassima will be published in the weeks leading up to the event by the Saint Roch Casamassima Feast Committee and the Municipality. Following tradition, the festivities should include religious events, with the novena and processions starting from the Mother Church, and secular events with musical bands, illuminations, and a fireworks display. For updated dates and the program, it is recommended to check the official channels of the Municipality of Casamassima.
Casamassima is located about 20 km south of Bari. By car, it can be reached via the SS100 Bari-Taranto road, taking the Casamassima exit. By train, the Ferrovie del Sud Est line connects Bari to Casamassima; from the station, the historic center is reachable on foot or via short local connections.
The festival traditionally takes place in September, usually on the second weekend of the month. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced.
