Where wine becomes sacred: Nosiola and Vino Santo Trentino in Santa Massenza and Padergnone
DiVinNosiola is one of the most iconic food and wine events in Trentino-Alto Adige: two weeks, between late March and early April, dedicated to Nosiola—the region's only native white grape variety—and the prestigious Vino Santo Trentino DOC, a meditation passito wine recognized as a Slow Food Presidium. The festival spans the entire Valle dei Laghi, but its heart beats in the Municipality of Vallelaghi (Autonomous Province of Trento), where the Association of Vino Santo Trentino D.O.C. Winemakers is based in Santa Massenza.
The village of Santa Massenza, overlooking the lake of the same name, is known as the Trentino capital of artisanal grappa and is home to some of the valley's historic wineries: Giovanni Poli, Francesco Poli, and Maxentia. During DiVinNosiola, this is the setting for masterclasses dedicated to passito, multi-course gourmet dinners pairing Nosiola and Vino Santo, and the Cammini DiVini (Divine Walks) that blend wine, theater, and landscape.
In Padergnone, another village in Vallelaghi, you will find the Casa Caveau del Vino Santo, the symbolic venue of the event. This is where the evocative ritual of the Aspersione takes place: an ancient secular tradition that involves bathing one's eyes with drops of Nosiola as a good-luck gesture for the agricultural season, accompanied by the songs of the Coro Valle dei Laghi.
Vino Santo is born from the long drying process of Nosiola grapes on arèle, traditional wooden racks, favored by the Ora del Garda, the wind that blows up from the lake. After about six months of drying, the grapes are pressed in the Ritual of the Spremitura, which is celebrated during Holy Week and marks the transition from drying to winemaking.
DiVinNosiola is not just a tasting event, but an authentic immersion into Trentino's winemaking tradition, set amidst landscapes of rare beauty, charming villages like Santa Massenza and Padergnone, and the warm hospitality of the local winemakers. A unique opportunity to discover a wine produced in very limited quantities and the territory that guards it.
The sixteenth edition of DiVinNosiola was held from March 27 to April 10, 2026, throughout the Valle dei Laghi, with Vallelaghi as one of its nerve centers. The big news of the year was the inauguration of the Nosiola Trail, a 9 km loop between Padergnone and Santa Massenza enriched by 13 educational installations in larch wood inspired by the arèle, as well as a 28 km MTB route that sustainably connects the local wineries.
On April 4, at the Casa Caveau del Vino Santo in Padergnone, the ritual of the Aspersione was celebrated, accompanied by the songs of the Coro Valle dei Laghi. On April 6, the Nosiola Express, the Vino Santo train, visited Santa Massenza—the capital of artisanal grappa—along with Lasino and Pergolese, featuring tastings in the wineries. The Spremitura (pressing) ritual on March 29 at the Pedrotti Winery symbolically opened the winemaking process for the Vino Santo.
Vallelaghi is located in the Valle dei Laghi, about 15 km from Trento. By car: from the A22 Brenner motorway, take the Trento Centro exit, then the SS45 bis towards Lake Toblino and Sarche; this will lead you to the villages of Santa Massenza and Padergnone. By train: Trento station, then Trentino Trasporti bus line towards the valley.
Many events require reservations. Prices vary by event: masterclasses between €25 and €30, gourmet dinners from €70, Nosiola Express approximately €60, walks starting from €15. Some rituals, like the Aspersione and the Spremitura, are free to attend. Info and reservations: tel. +39 349 3365446, email [email protected], website vinosantotrentino.it.
The event takes place between late March and early April, coinciding with Holy Week and the traditional pressing of the Vino Santo.
