La Fera de San Martin is one of the most deeply rooted traditions in the village of Stenico, located in the Giudicarie area of the province of Trento, in the heart of Trentino-Alto Adige. Every year, coinciding with St. Martin's Day (November 11th), the town comes alive with a fair that traces its origins back to mountain farming culture and symbolically marks the end of the harvest season.

Origins: From livestock market to village festival

The roots of the fair date back to the early 19th century: around 1812, Stenico hosted a major market for St. Martin's Day, serving as a meeting point for farmers and traders to buy and sell livestock and exchange local goods like potatoes, walnuts, and cheeses, as well as a chance to purchase footwear and clothing for the coming winter. In Alpine tradition, St. Martin's Day represented the threshold between the end of agricultural labor and the start of the cold season, a time for moving livestock and paying rents.

The fair program

Today, La Fera de San Martin preserves its traditional spirit and spans several days around November 11th. In the square of Stenico and along the historic center, visitors will find:

• a farmers' market and stalls featuring local artisanal and gastronomic products;
• music and entertainment, with convivial evenings featuring food and fine wine;
• Holy Mass in honor of the saint;
• a community lunch and traditional Trentino dishes, including tripe;
• cultural initiatives dedicated to the village's farming heritage.
