Autumn in San Lorenzo Dorsino celebrates the Ciuìga del Banale, a Slow Food Presidium sausage
The Ciuìga Festival is the most anticipated autumn event in the municipality of San Lorenzo Dorsino, a mountain village in the Province of Trento (Trentino-Alto Adige) overlooking the Brenta Dolomites and listed among the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy. Every late October, for three days, the ancient districts of Berghi and Pergnano, in the San Lorenzo in Banale area, transform into a large open-air market centered around the village's signature product: the Ciuìga del Banale.
The Ciuìga is a humble, traditional peasant sausage born from the resourcefulness of mountain families: pork mixed with cooked white turnips, stuffed, and smoked. Rediscovered and promoted in the 2000s, it became a Slow Food Presidium after receiving recognition at the Salone del Gusto in Turin. The festival was created specifically to share and showcase this unique product, which is served in the gastronomic inns in various ways: with polenta, in burgers, on charcuterie boards, and in rich meat sauces.
The event is organized by the Pro Loco San Lorenzo in Banale in collaboration with the municipality, the APT Dolomiti Paganella, the Borgo Vivo Consortium, and Slow Food, mobilizing over three hundred volunteers from local associations. The heart of the festival is the traditional market featuring dozens of artisans, hobbyists, and producers, accompanied by numerous food stalls managed by local associations and restaurants offering themed menus.
Beyond the food, the Ciuìga Festival offers guided tastings of excellent Trentino wines, foliage excursions along the trails of the Brenta Dolomites, workshops and spaces dedicated to children, performances, live music, and mountain bands that bring the village streets to life. Since 2018, the festival has been the first in the Trentino region to obtain the 'Quality Festival' mark from UNPLI, a recognition of authenticity, tradition, and commitment to the local territory.
With approximately twenty thousand visitors over three days, the Ciuìga Festival is much more than a food and wine event: it is a showcase for an entire community that, through volunteer work, shares its culture, flavors, and the landscape of the Giudicarie Esteriori. It is the perfect opportunity to discover an authentic Trentino village in the heart of autumn's vibrant colors.
In 2026, the Ciuìga Festival celebrates its 25th anniversary with a three-day event, from October 30 to November 1. The traditional market and gastronomic inns are open from 9:30 AM to 6:30 PM in the Ville of Berghi and Pergnano. The program combines flavors, nature, and culture: Friday the 30th features a hemp workshop, an easy hike starting from Casa Osèi in the afternoon, and live music from 8:00 PM. Saturday the 31st includes the 'Foliage Trekking' (6 km, free upon reservation), Ferrari Trento wine tastings, the traditional 'Ciuìga Cutting' ceremony, performances, and music. Sunday, November 1, features guided hikes, the 'Dolomiti Wine Experience,' and the festival in music.
Admission to the event is free: only a 2-euro contribution is requested for car parking, while many excursions and tastings are free. A free area for campers is available at the Promeghin Sports Center with a shuttle train connection.
The festival takes place in the districts of Berghi and Pergnano (Ville) in San Lorenzo Dorsino (TN), 38078, in the Giudicarie Esteriori, at the foot of the Brenta Dolomites.
By car: take the SS237 del Caffaro road to San Lorenzo in Banale. A 2-euro contribution is requested for car parking. A free, unequipped area for campers is available at the Promeghin Sports Center, connected to the event by a free shuttle train.
