The first festival dedicated to the iconic Sicilian Christmas pastry, held in the medieval village of Carini
For the first time, the Municipality of Carini, in the province of Palermo, is dedicating a festival to the buccellato, the pastry that captures the essence of the Sicilian Christmas more than any other. Organized by the Pro Loco Carini al Centro, the event brings the medieval village and Corso Umberto I to life during the holiday season, transforming the historic center into a journey of flavors, aromas, and tradition.
The buccellato is a shortcrust pastry ring filled with dried figs, almonds, walnuts, raisins, candied orange peel, and spices, decorated with icing and candied fruit. In many Sicilian families, it is a staple on the table between Christmas and Epiphany: the festival was created specifically to celebrate this confectionery heritage and the craftsmanship of local bakeries and pastry shops.
At the heart of the event is the official competition between Carini's bakeries and pastry shops, which are invited to present their own version of the buccellato. A jury evaluates the creations, rewarding excellence, taste, and faithfulness to tradition: a way to showcase local artisanal quality and spark healthy competition among master pastry chefs.
Along the village streets, the public can enjoy tastings, cooking shows dedicated to the preparation of the pastry, live music, street performers, and craft stalls. The festival is part of the broader Carini Christmas program, which includes markets, a living nativity scene at the Castle, and various initiatives throughout the historic center.
With this inaugural edition, Carini aims to make the Buccellato Festival a permanent fixture of the holiday season in the province of Palermo, attracting visitors, food lovers, and curious travelers to its charming medieval village while strengthening the bond between community, culinary tradition, and local tourism in Sicily.
The first edition of the Carini Buccellato Festival, organized by the Pro Loco Carini al Centro, brought the medieval village and Corso Umberto I to life during the peak of the holiday season: December 26, January 1, and January 6. The highlight was the official competition between local bakeries and pastry shops for the best buccellato, with a jury awarding prizes for taste and tradition.
The public enjoyed tastings, cooking shows dedicated to the pastry, live music, and visited craft stalls, all as part of the rich Christmas program of the Municipality of Carini, in the province of Palermo.
The program included: a competition between local bakeries and pastry shops, free tastings, cooking shows, live music, street performers, and craft stalls along Corso Umberto I.
