Celebrating the patron saint of Europe at the Abbey of San Martino delle Scale

In the green heart of San Martino delle Scale, nestled in the woods of Mount Caputo just a few kilometers from Monreale (Metropolitan City of Palermo), the Saint Benedict of Norcia Festival stands as one of the most deeply rooted religious and cultural events in Western Sicily. Spanning over 130 years, the festival honors the founder of the Benedictine order, proclaimed patron saint of Europe, whose legacy is inextricably linked to the ancient Benedictine Abbey of San Martino delle Scale, the spiritual and cultural anchor of the village.
The core of the festival is the celebration of the patron saint. The days are marked by a three-day preparation period (triduum), featuring vespers and holy masses in the Abbey basilica, culminating in a solemn pontifical mass and the procession of the statue of Saint Benedict through the village streets. The blessing of bread and oil is a particularly moving ritual, reflecting Benedictine hospitality and rural traditions. The procession is accompanied by local marching bands and parish confraternities, while the festive ringing of bells signals the start of the main day.
A highlight of the event is the Organ Festival, a prestigious concert series that has graced the Abbey basilica for decades, featuring renowned organists. The event celebrates the Abbey's architectural and musical heritage, blending the spirituality of the site with great sacred and classical music.
Beyond the devotional aspect, the evenings transform San Martino delle Scale into a lively village fair: food stalls offering street food and local specialties, craft markets, a funfair for children, magic shows, cabaret, historical costume dances, and tribute concerts in Piazza P. Semeria. The festival traditionally concludes with a spectacular fireworks display that illuminates the valley.
The festival is also the perfect opportunity to visit the Benedictine Abbey, a jewel of art and history, and to explore a mountain village known for its cool climate, a historic summer retreat for the people of Palermo. It is an experience that weaves together faith, music, nature, and conviviality in the true Sicilian tradition.
The 2026 edition of the Saint Benedict of Norcia Festival in San Martino delle Scale (Municipality of Monreale) will take place in July, as it does every year. The festival will feature its traditional structure: the triduum of preparation, solemn pontifical mass, procession of the patron saint's statue, blessing of bread and oil, the Organ Festival in the Abbey basilica, food stalls, and the final fireworks display. Information will be updated as soon as the official program is released.
