Medieval and Renaissance festival in the village and at the La Grua-Talamanca Castle
Carini Storica is the medieval and Renaissance re-enactment festival that brings the historic center of Carini, a town in the Metropolitan City of Palermo, Sicily, to life every September. For an entire weekend, the cobbled alleys of the village and the grounds of the La Grua-Talamanca Castle transform into an open-air stage, where knights, ladies, artisans, and merchants return to populate the streets, recreating the atmosphere of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
The heart of the festival is the grand period costume parade: glittering armor, noble attire, flag-wavers, and drummers accompany the public through theatrical re-enactments, encampments, and duels. Numerous Sicilian historical groups participate in the editions, reconstructing environments, clothing, weapons, and objects with great fidelity to documentary sources, respecting historically accurate fabrics, colors, forging techniques, and decorations.
Among the most beloved events are the falconry displays, with hawks and imperial owls soaring above the castle towers, and the ancient workshops where artisans demonstrate trades and techniques long forgotten. Along the route, the stalls of the period market tell the story of the evolution of trade and craftsmanship from the Middle Ages to the 18th century, featuring traditional products, artifacts, and local specialties.
The main setting for the event is the La Grua-Talamanca Castle, an Arab-Norman fortress that dominates the village and was once the home of the dynasty of the same name, linked to the famous story of the Baroness Laura Lanza, the "Baroness of Carini." Its halls, the pointed Moorish gate, and the historic prisons provide the ideal backdrop for an event that weaves together entertainment, history, and heritage promotion.
More than just a local fair, Carini Storica serves as a laboratory of shared memory, involving the entire community in the rediscovery of their roots. The organizers' goal is to enhance the historical and artistic heritage of Carini, promote cultural continuity and Sicilian identity, and become a benchmark for cultural tourism in support of local development.
The third edition of Carini Storica will be held on September 26 and 27, 2026, in the historic center of Carini, in the province of Palermo. As in previous editions, the village and the La Grua-Talamanca Castle will once again be populated by knights, ladies, flag-wavers, artisans, and merchants in period costumes, amidst open-air theatrical re-enactments, falconry displays, and ancient workshops showcasing long-lost trades.
Among the novelties announced for 2026, the free opening of the historic prisons of the La Grua-Talamanca Castle stands out: a cell brought to light and enriched with original naval engravings will be open to the public, adding a new piece to the fortress's heritage enhancement project.
The detailed program with times and appointments will be published by the organizers closer to the event on the official channels of the manifestation.
Carini is located about 25 km west of Palermo, along the A29 Palermo-Mazara del Vallo motorway (Carini exit). By train, it is reachable via the Palermo-Trapani line, at the Carini station. The nearest airport is Palermo-Punta Raisi (Falcone-Borsellino), just a few kilometers away.
The festival takes place in the historic village of Carini and around the La Grua-Talamanca Castle, generally during a weekend in September. It is recommended to reach the center on foot, given the pedestrian zone.
Access to the village and street activities is generally free; for visits and initiatives at the castle, it is recommended to check methods and times on the event's official channels.
