About River Prawn Festival

Every August, Amaro, a small town at the entrance to Carnia, celebrates its most iconic symbol: the river prawn. The Festa del Gambero is a gastronomic festival that brings the Amaro prawn to the table alongside the great classics of Carnia cuisine, including frico, polenta, and local specialties, in a village festival atmosphere with live music.

The Prawn, Symbol of Amaro

In Amaro, at the entrance to Carnia between the waters of the Tagliamento river and the springs at the foot of the mountain, the river prawn is not just a dish: it is an emblem. It is even found on the town's coat of arms, and an old local legend tells of some women who, near a spring, encountered a "terrible-looking animal with two large pincers", which was none other than a large prawn. From this deep connection with the territory comes the Festa del Gambero, the festival that attracts visitors and gourmets to the village every summer.

A Taste of Carnia

The absolute star is, of course, the Amaro river prawn, prepared according to traditional Friulian recipes. However, the festival is also an opportunity to rediscover the robust and authentic flavors of Carnia cuisine: frico with polenta, mountain cheeses and cured meats, accompanied by Friulian wines. The food stalls, run by Pro Loco volunteers, operate for several evenings in a genuine and family-friendly atmosphere.

A Community Celebration

Organized by Pro Loco Amaro with the support of the Municipality of Amaro (Province of Udine), the festival combines good food with musical evenings, dancing, and the typical cheerfulness of mountain festivals. It is one of those events that tell the story of the real Carnia: that of local products, conviviality, and the pride of a small town in its traditions.

River Prawn Festival — edition 2026

The Amaro River Prawn Festival is scheduled from August 6 to 10, 2026 (dates to be confirmed): five days dedicated to river prawns and the flavors of Carnia, with food stalls and live music.

For 2026, the River Prawn Festival is planned from August 6 to 10, continuing the usual early August timing; the dates are still to be officially confirmed by Pro Loco Amaro. Five evenings dedicated to the Amaro prawn and Carnia cuisine, featuring food stalls, music, and conviviality.
