The best of Carnia's alpine pastures in Enemonzo
When summer ends and the alpine pastures of Carnia close for the season, the cheeses and ricotta aged at high altitudes return to the valley. It's time for the Cheese and Alpine Pasture Ricotta Market Exhibition in Enemonzo, in the province of Udine: one of the oldest and most beloved festivals in the Friulian mountains, attracting thousands of food lovers and curious visitors every September.
With over fifty years of editions behind it – the 51st was held in 2025 – the event organized by Pro Loco Enemonzo is now a cornerstone of the Carnic autumn. Originally created to promote alpine dairy production, it has grown into a large village festival that combines taste, tradition, and fun, celebrating the deep bond between this community and the mountains.
The heart of the event is, of course, the alpine pasture cheese: wheels aged at high altitudes, smoked ricotta, frico, and other traditional Carnic products can be tasted and purchased at the market. Visitors can also witness the live stages of cheese making and browse the stalls of local artisans, in an atmosphere that smells of milk, hay, and wood.
Alongside the gastronomic offerings, the exhibition features a packed entertainment program: orchestras and folk groups, dancing, nature walks, helicopter rides, comedy and fire shows, stilt walkers, homemade cake competitions, workshops for children, and entertainment for the younger crowd. A mix that makes the Enemonzo festival one of the most complete experiences for discovering Carnia in September, between rural culture and popular celebration.
The 52nd edition of the Cheese and Alpine Pasture Ricotta Market Exhibition is expected in Enemonzo in September 2026, following the tradition of holding the event on the second and third weekends of the month. Pro Loco Enemonzo will once again host the grand festival dedicated to Carnia's alpine cheeses, featuring tastings, live cheese-making demonstrations, an artisan market, and a rich entertainment program.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition will be announced by Pro Loco Enemonzo in the weeks leading up to the event. Based on recent editions, the exhibition spans two September weekends and includes:
How to get there: Enemonzo is located in Carnia (UD), along the Tagliamento valley, accessible from the SS52 Carnica state road.
When: Traditionally the second and third weekends of September.
Accommodation: Lodging facilities in Enemonzo and in the nearby municipalities of Villa Santina, Tolmezzo, and Ovaro.
