The first and longest-running food and wine walking tour in Trentino
The Alta Vallagarina Magnalonga is the original and longest-running food and wine walking tour in Trentino. Established in the late 1990s, it transforms the hills and vineyards of the Alta Vallagarina into a scenic trail of taste every first Sunday of September, where walking goes hand-in-hand with tasting. This is not a race, but a 10-kilometre non-competitive walk suitable for families, groups of friends, and food lovers, blending the pleasure of fine dining with the discovery of a fascinating landscape.
The route winds through the municipalities of Volano, Besenello, and Calliano, in the heart of the Vallagarina in the province of Trento. It follows dirt roads, forest paths, ancient farmhouses, and the striking medieval fortresses that overlook the valley, such as Castel Pietra and Castel Beseno, the largest fortified complex in Trentino. Along the way, walkers encounter cultivated vineyards, panoramic views of the Adige Valley, and historical landmarks that define the identity of this part of Trentino-Alto Adige.
The heart of the event lies in the nine food and wine stops scattered along the route. At each station, you can sample a traditional Trentino dish paired with wines from local wineries: from mountain cheeses with honey and carne salada with potato dumplings to fortaie, speck, and orzotto with luganega sausage, ending with coffee and grappa. The menu also includes vegetarian and gluten-free options, available upon reservation, ensuring everyone can enjoy the experience.
The Magnalonga is organised by the Magnalonga Committee with the support of the municipal administrations of Volano, Besenello, and Calliano, and the hard work of over two hundred volunteers. This spirit of collaboration makes the event a cherished tradition for the entire Alta Vallagarina community, successfully combining regional promotion, local product awareness, and tourism in a day of celebration open to all.
The 2026 edition of the Alta Vallagarina Magnalonga, the 28th, will be held on Sunday, September 6, 2026, with staggered departures from Parco Legàt in Volano starting at 9:30 AM, in groups every 30 minutes. The approximately 10-kilometre route climbs the lush hills of Volano, ventures into the woods past ancient farmhouses to the base of Castel Pietra, the medieval fortress in the heart of Alta Vallagarina, and continues along the vineyards to the finish in the centre of Calliano.
The nine gastronomic stops offer a warm welcome with coffee and biscuits, speck with rösti, orzotto with luganega, elderberry juice, Trentino cheeses with honey, apple slices, carne salada with potatoes, fortaie, and a final coffee and grappa, all paired with local wines. Vegetarian and gluten-free menus are available upon mandatory reservation.
