The Addolorata Festival is the most important and well-attended event in the small municipality of Calliano, in Vallagarina, in the Province of Trento (Trentino-Alto Adige). Organized by the Comitato Calliano Iniziative since 2002, the festival brings together local associations and hundreds of volunteers who, every year, transform the historic center's porticoes and courtyards into a vibrant meeting point for the entire community and visitors from the Adige Valley.
The festival is deeply rooted in popular devotion. Its centerpiece is the Procession of Our Lady of Sorrows, during which the statue of the Virgin is carried through the streets of the historic center. The tradition stems from the memory of World War II: Calliano was heavily bombed and about 70% of its homes were razed to the ground, yet the village suffered no civilian casualties. The procession is still observed today as a gesture of gratitude to Our Lady of Sorrows for overcoming those difficult times.
Along the porticoes and in the village courtyards, numerous food and wine stalls are set up, offering traditional Trentino dishes paired with wines from local Vallagarina wineries, one of the most renowned wine-growing areas in Trentino. The festival is thus also an opportunity to rediscover traditional cuisine and local products.
Alongside the religious and gastronomic aspects, the event offers three days of entertainment:
Traditionally held on the third weekend of September, the Addolorata Festival represents the most defining moment of the year for Calliano, uniting faith, conviviality, and the promotion of Trentino's food and wine culture in a quaint and charming village, just a few kilometers from Rovereto and Trento.
As of the writing of this page, the Comitato Calliano Iniziative has not yet published the official dates for the 2026 edition of the Addolorata Festival. Based on tradition, the festival is expected to return on the third weekend of September in the porticoes of Calliano's historic center, with the usual program of Trentino food and wine stalls, musical performances, exhibitions, and the solemn Sunday procession. The detailed program will be announced by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event.
Calliano is located in Vallagarina, along the Adige Valley, between Trento and Rovereto. By car: take the A22 Brennero motorway to the Rovereto Nord or Trento Sud exit, then follow the SS12. By train: the nearest station is Calliano on the Verona-Brennero line, or Rovereto for major connections.
Access to the festival and performances is free. Food and wine stalls charge according to individual menus.
The event takes place in the porticoes and courtyards of the historic center: it is recommended to reach the village on foot from nearby parking areas.
