Summer botanical walks at the Orto dei Semplici of Palazzo Eccheli-Baisi
Every summer, the Guided Tours of the Brentonico Botanical Garden invite residents and visitors to discover one of the most precious natural treasures in the Trentino-Alto Adige region. The garden is located in the municipality of Brentonico, in the Province of Trento, near the historic Palazzo Eccheli-Baisi, at an altitude of approximately 690 meters, in a panoramic position overlooking the Brentonico plateau and the slopes of Monte Baldo.
Inaugurated in 2005, the Orto dei Semplici (Garden of Simples) in Brentonico covers about 6,000 square meters and was designed based on the Renaissance botanical gardens of Padua and Pisa. Today, it houses around five hundred plant species, divided into two main areas: to the west, the garden of simples, featuring traditional medicinal and officinal plants; to the east, a section dedicated to the rich native flora of Monte Baldo, historically known as Hortus Europae for its extraordinary biodiversity.
The tour series is organized by the Municipality of Brentonico in collaboration with the Fondazione Museo Civico di Rovereto, which oversees the scientific direction. Visitors are accompanied by the museum's botanical experts, who explain the cultivated species, their properties, and the deep bond between humans and mountain plants. The walks last about an hour and take place during the warmer months, from June to October, with both afternoon and evening sessions.
In addition to regular tours, the calendar features two themed evenings that are very popular with the public. The first, «Eyes to the Sky», is dedicated to observing the night sky with the naked eye and through a telescope, taking advantage of the plateau's clear skies far from city lights. The second, «Animals in the Night», is an evening sound walk to listen to and identify the calls of insects, birds, and bats that bring the garden to life after dark.
Participation is free, but mandatory booking is required by the day before by contacting the Brentonico Tourist Office. The initiative is designed for families, nature lovers, hikers, and the curious, offering a simple and pleasant way to learn about the botanical heritage of Monte Baldo and the history of Renaissance gardens.
