Dialect comedies from Brindisi performed in the city's neighborhoods

The Vernacular Theatre Festival is a theatrical series dedicated to celebrating the language and popular traditions of Brindisi, the provincial capital of Apulia. Launched in 2025, the event aims to bring back dialect comediesโa cultural heritage often overlookedโby entrusting them to the amateur companies that have long enlivened the area. The festival embraces the concept of proximity theatre: performances are not held in a single venue but move from neighborhood to neighborhood, bringing the stage directly to the people.
The format features an open-air, traveling stage: each evening takes place in a different part of the city, including squares, parks, and neighborhood plazas. In its inaugural edition, the festival visited the Commenda, Paradiso, Bozzano, and Casale districts, with a special closing night in the Sant'Elia neighborhood. The underlying idea is to transform the city's most evocative spaces into performance venues, combining theatre, tradition, and social interaction to give every district a moment of collective celebration.
The heart of the festival lies in the Brindisi theatre companies committed to rediscovering the vernacular, which have distinguished themselves over the years for their originality, dramaturgical quality, and consistent activity. Key participants include Li tre compAri, I Teatranti, Il Sipario, and Anti&Mino, who stage dialect comedies that are as hilarious as they are essential for preserving the unique way of speaking and storytelling typical of Brindisi.
Promoted by the newspaper L'Ora di Brindisi and the Periferia cultural association, with the patronage of the Municipality of Brindisi and included in the city's summer calendar, the festival has enjoyed broad public participation since its debut, drawing thousands of spectators. Admission to all performances is free, in line with the festival's popular, neighborhood-focused mission, designed as an opportunity for families, the elderly, and young people to come together.
Beyond the entertainment, the Vernacular Theatre Festival serves as a tool for cultural transmission: the Brindisi dialect, with its idioms and humor, takes center stage and is passed on to new generations. In an Apulia increasingly attentive to valuing its roots, the festival represents a key piece of identity for the city of Brindisi and the entire province, where dialect comedy remains a deeply cherished form of popular art.
The 2026 edition of the Vernacular Theatre Festival in Brindisi has not yet been officially scheduled. Building on the success of the first edition, which drew thousands of spectators to the city's neighborhoods in the summer of 2025, the organizers have expressed their intention to continue the festival and expand it to other districts. Dates, locations, and participating companies will be announced by the L'Ora di Brindisi newspaper and the Periferia cultural association ahead of the summer. This page will be updated as soon as the official program is released.
Performances are held outdoors in various neighborhoods of Brindisi (including Commenda, Paradiso, Bozzano, Casale, and Sant'Elia). Precise locations vary by evening and are announced by the organizers closer to each date.
